Diane Nalini composes and sings in four languages. She has recorded four critically-acclaimed albums, sung at jazz festivals around the globe, and given gala performances for President Bill Clinton and Sir Paul McCartney. She was nominated for the Grand Prix de Jazz General Motors at the 2002 Montreal International Jazz Festival and won second prize in the UK’s Young Jazz Vocalist of the Year awards for 2001. Diane’s original songs have also been featured in television programs and several films.
Bassist and bandleader Adrian Cho is founder and Artistic Director of the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra, a unique, critically acclaimed symphonic jazz ensemble that brings together an impressive array of professional jazz and symphony musicians with a focus on both entertaining and educating. Adrian moved to Canada from his native Australia nearly 20 years ago.
Diane and Adrian met on a gig in 2013, marrying later that year. They have been making music together ever since. While they love performing in Big Band music, they especially cherish performing as a duo because it lets them get so close to their audience.

Taking inspiration from a mix of diverse influences TANDEM meshes contemporary experimental musical influences such as electroacoustic, minimalism and free improvisation. The trio deploys a large instrumental palette through the improvised gesture, playing music totally oriented towards the present.
Sound and the act of listening constitute the core of this music.

Elizabeth will discuss what it means to be authentic as a musician, the difference between authenticity and honesty, what authenticity looks like as a process and more.
This workshop will be offered for a PWYC donation. ---------------------------------------------------- Velvety-voiced pianist Elizabeth Shepherd arrived on the international scene in 2006 when her debut album Start To Move was voted one of the top jazz albums of the year by the listeners of the influential Gilles Peterson Show on BBC Radio Worldwide. Since then, the Montreal-based soul-jazz innovator has established herself as one of the most alluring and imaginative artists on the scene today. A classical pianist who came to jazz through her love of old-school hip-hop, it's perhaps no surprise that this globetrotting talent has developed such a distinct and unique voice.
Elizabeth has been hailed as “a jazz virtuoso blessed with a pop sensibility”, praised by critics worldwide for her arrestingly original writing and soulful delivery. She is seen as part of a wave of jazz musicians bringing the art form to a new generation of music fans. The four-time JUNO nominee (Canada's GRAMMY) has released five widely acclaimed records and toured extensively in North America, Europe, Japan and Mexico. She has sold out legendary clubs from Tokyo to Detroit, played major festivals like Montreal and North Sea Jazz Festivals, and opened for Jamie Cullum at a sold out Hollywood Bowl.
Elizabeth is also the only jazz vocalist to ever have been nominated (twice) for the Polaris Prize – Canada’s most prestigious music prize. On her most recent album The Signal Shepherd teamed up with guitar genius and Herbie Hancock bandmember Lionel Loueke. The record was hailed as a "masterpiece", appeared on numerous Best-of-the- Year list across the world, and was longlisted for the 2015 Polaris Music Prize. Elizabeth's upcoming 2018 album MONtreal is a multi-media project devoted to the history of her vibrant hometown.

The Silence Collective is composed of Guelph-based improvisors dedicated to intentional listening and inventive sounding. The group has collaborated with artists ranging from Thomas King (author of An Inconvenient Indian) to Dong-Won Kim (member of Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble). This outing during the Guelph Jazz Festival is entitled Tabula Rasa which means “an absence of preconceived ideas or predetermined goals; a clean slate.” The players will include Matt Brubeck on cello, Gary Diggins on cornet, Daniel Fischlin on guitar, Lewis Melville on bass, and Joseph Sorbara on percussion. Each member layers in additional colours from both acoustic and electronic palettes. Surprise guest artists will be included in the evening’s performance.

For the past seven years, Silence has hosted a regular, unbroken cycle of Morning Music sessions on Mondays fifty-two weeks a year. The inclusive gathering is open to anyone regardless of musical training or background. Sitting in a circle, participants are asked to listen to what is emerging and contribute to the improvisation through experimentation and exploration. The emerging soundscapes span the sonic spectrum from the mild to the wild. During the opening of the Guelph Jazz Festival, and as part of Silence's commitment to risk-taking improvisatory practices, anyone is welcome to bring or borrow an instrument and experience the unfolding nature of Morning Music in the Evening. The invitation is simply to listen well, take risks, play in the moment. A core grouping from the regular Morning Music sessions will be present to animate and facilitate. Listeners and artists from other media are more than welcome to attend and contribute.

Hosted my birthday party at Silence and I can't say enough GREAT things about this venue and its staff! Everyone who works there is incredibly knowledgeable and so willing to go above and beyond to help you out! The space is BEAUTIFUL and so creative. Would host an event there again any day and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone looking for a space in Guelph!

I have attended two performances at Silence and both were brilliant: The Spring Equinox Celebration with Gary Diggins, Jeff Bird and Adam Bowman, and also the solo performance by Daniel Champagne. The talent and musicianship were of a quality to be expected at a national concert venue, and the intimate Silence space provided a close encounter of the best kind. I'll be a delighted regular!
