2018 VINTAGE FILM FESTIVAL: OCT 12-14 Twenty six years ago (1992), a group of film enthusiasts involved in the restoration of the Marie Dressler house had a wild idea. Why not hold a festival showing the films in which Marie Dressler had starred? This seemingly fantastic idea grew into the present form in which we show a variety of films generally made before about 50-60 years ago. We will often, although not always, include a film starring Marie Dressler.
The weekend is best enjoyed as an event and not just a collection of great movies. We start with a movie for pass holders only, then there’s our Gala reception followed by two films. Then on Saturday we show a collection of six movies that range from very old, silent films starring Mary Pickford, Erich von Stroheim or Douglas Fairbanks, to talkies and musicals. On Sunday we show four movies.
Bursaries by Marie Dressler Foundation Money raised by the festival goes to the Marie Dressler Foundation and one of their activities is to provide bursaries for students in Northumberland High Schools. For more information, please go to the Marie Dressler Foundation Web site.

"The Capitol was originally built as a movie theatre, and director Antonio Sarmiento has taken full advantage of this non-traditional stage space by using the screen, the walls, and the ceiling to project imagery. This allows him to make wonderful atmospheric effects, like creating the illusion that the audience is underwater, and gives him more freedom in staging hard-to-visualize moments like the shipwreck scene. The rotating set pieces were used cleverly through a combination of placement on the stage, projected imagery, and physical props to change the scene from a ship at sea, to a lush palace, and even to an underwater world. Even technical wizardry can’t hold up a musical production without solid performances. Thankfully, there’s an abundance of them on display here. In fact, every performer — from the leads to the ensemble — is top-notch. There was not a weak performance — singing, dancing, or acting — in this cast." FRI SEP 14: Our friends at the Marie Dressler Foundation present WOMEN AND HOLLYWOOD, a presentation of speakers at VICTORIA HALL in Cobourg.
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT AT THE CAPITOL THEATRE.
Cobourg-born Academy Award winner Marie Dressler was an early celebrity champion of opportunities for women. Some eighty four years later, opportunities for women is still an important issue. With this in mind, The Marie Dressler Foundation has arranged an interesting pair of talks.
Our first speaker, Matthew Kennedy, is a writer, film historian, anthropologist and author of Marie Dressler: A Biography and two other biographies of classic Hollywood. Matthew will focus the lesser-known work of Marie Dressler as a social activist to a number of vital causes of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The generosity and commitment of her humanitarian efforts translates into the warm and unforgettable screen performances that have delighted audiences for over a century.
Our featured speaker, Cari Beauchamp is the award winning author of Without Lying Down: Frances Marion and the Powerful Women of early Hollywood and five other books of film history. A Vanity Fair contributor, Cari has written, produced and appeared in over a dozen documentaries, serves as the Resident Scholar of the Mary Pickford Foundation and is the only person to twice be named an Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Scholar. In her talk entitled Women and Hollywood, Cari will explore what has really changed since the movie days of Marie Dressler, some 90 years ago – from the powerful roles of women in front of and behind the cameras in early Hollywood to the importance of communities of women, then and now.

Since moving out to this area from Toronto 3 years ago, we have seen many productions at the Capitol Theatre in Port Hope and each one has been outstanding and, in my opinion, rivals any production in quality to the high-priced Toronto theatres. Having just seen Fiddler on the Roof, we can't wait to go back again in the very near future.
seeing the production of fiddler on Saturday after noon was better than one could hope for being that the lighting was not working and most of the play was to dark to see the faces of the actors but with all the problems of that I have never seen a better production of fiddler any where Tevye was phenomenal but the acing and singing of all the players where above and beyond well done Port Hope also lets not forget how well stage and scenery was done
An absolutely outstanding performance of Beauty and the Beast! We took our 6 year old son for his 1st theatre experience and he was thrilled! He says 'It was the most best thing I've ever seen'! To top off the experience, Gaston threw a purple lollipop to our son at the end of the show which made the experience even more perfect! We thank you so very much and cannot wait to attend our next performance!
I cannot begin to describe how AMAZING this theatre is!! I took my step daughters to beauty and the beast and it was amazing! I cried and she was on the edge of her seat for a better part of the time!
The show was amazing! The characters walk through the audience at points!
The location is licensed and you can take drinks and concession snacks into the show.
Thank you for the wonderful help getting us seated, offering booster seats etc! Just wonderful!
We will be back for sure!
Thank you for the amazing experience! We were able to have some great bonding time!
The setting of the theatre itself is beautiful and then you step foot inside this magical place and are swept away! The staff were sweet, the concession prices reasonable, and the seating ideal for viewing. We saw Beauty and the Beast and WOW!!! The set, costumes, choreography, signing and acting were incredible! I felt like a little kid again and I actually geared up a little during roll call. It was amazing! A perfect date night!
This was my first time to the Capital and Port Hope on Tuesday August 15th. Theatre seating was great - lots of leg room and every seat had a great view of the stage. Beauty and the Beast was awesome - incredible acting! This cast was amazing. I think a special thanks goes out to everyone behind the scenes as without them - lighting, sound and all those little things an audience takes for granted help to make the production a success. Good Job and I will definitely be watching for future shows.
Debbie
One word : PHENOMENAL. my husband and I visited the theatre for the 1st time yesterday (Aug 26th) for the matinee showing of Beauty and the Beast. It was absolutely mind blowing! the theatre is beautiful, scenery was breathtaking and I can't say enough about the musical itself. it was fabulous. all of the staff were incredibly friendly! my husband spilled our popcorn in the lobby and without even being asked a staff member just brought us a brand new one no questions asked. We will definitely return in the future
I usually expect great things from Antonio and his staff whether hosting or producing (Kim's Convenience, Crazy For You, Mamma Mia), but Beauty and the Beast was exceptional! Marie Mahabal is stunningly wonderful as Belle, Michael Torontow gives a passionate performance as Beast, and Jay T. Schamarek gives a hilarious & boisterous take on Lumiere! The rest of the cast shines as well, and the set, sound, and atmosphere are sublime. If you're a theatre, Disney, or musical fan, you must not miss this! All that and you get to support a Canadian gem and local icon in Port Hope, Ontario!
Recently the Capitol Theatre hosted the Northumberland Players production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". It was a large show in every way with fifty-two in the cast, large set pieces, and a total production team of one hundred and four members. Theatre Manager Antonio Sarmiento and Facilities Coordinator Dana Kerr provided us with everything we needed to create a smooth production of a ten-show run. What could have been a stressful tech week proved to be a joy. Thank you, Antonio and Dana!
We have been to plays and concerts at this venue, and love it! We saw My Fair Lady last night which was absolutely phenomenal. Such incredible acting, dancing, and singing by the entire cast. I was enthralled throughout the entire show. The theatre is the perfect size to keep it intimate, inexpensive and very good seats throughout, free parking close by, good restaurants. Much better than the drive and lineups in Toronto.
Beautiful theatre, great acoustics. Easy to find and lots of parking nearby. Only negatives are the seat grading could be steeper so it's easier for kids/short people to over the person in front of them, and allowing popcorn in the theatre- very distracting to have to listen to crunching and bags crinkling. Otherwise, loved our visit!
This is my fourth show at this venue and I've got to say tonight's musical-Beauty and the Beast was FABULOUS. The entire production was out standing from beginning to end! The characters were bang on and I loved every one of them. If you haven't seen it yet get your tickets now, you will not be disappointed! Job well done guys and gals!!!
My 5 year old daughter was so excited to see Aladdin Jr and the production did not disappoint. Everyone in the play was amazing and we loved how the cast came out afterwards to meet and greet everyone in the audience. That made my daughter feel so special. Thank you for always exceeding our expectations. The Capitol Theatre is truly a gem.
Amazing venue, very friendly staff, went to see Beauty and the Beast and it was comparable to many Mirvish productions but in a smaller and more intimate atmosphere. Have seen multiple shows at Port Hope Capitol Theatre and they never disappoint! Love to support the performing arts in our local community. Keep up the great work!
I see each show I can at Capital Theatre. The shows are second to none, affordable and feature such amazing talent! I bring my young daughter to all shows appropriate for children and when we saw Snow White the Director was so kind he gave her an apple pin the actors of the show were wearing. It was such a kind gesture that made her feel very special. The staff at this theatre are so lively and kind and really go out of their way to make your family feel at home. I recommend this theatre to all my friends. I cannot say enough about this theatre!
We love the Capitol Theatre. We've been to three performances in the last two seasons and every cast has been excellent. The theatre is intimate enough that everyone has a good view of the stage and performances. The staging is done with a projection system to transform the set pieces to different locales and this is very effective at providing a wide range of backgrounds. The latest show we saw was Beauty and the Beast - marvelous voices, characterizations and dance. Thank you!
We saw the finale performance of the Naughty Panto , Robinhood, with friends from out of town. This show was great entertainment. We will be back for more next year! Amazing job Antonio!
I have attended many shows and have never been disappointed.
Was there last year and saw mamma mia it was great. Was just there and saw beauty and the beast and wow what an amazing show. Both times were for my sisters birthday and we will definitly be back again..
Beauty and the Beast was my first show at the Capitol and it took my breath away! Small town charm with 5 star city production. We will be back!
