Congratulations to the team at The Beechwood Retirement Residence for their winning submission in the 2018 Employee iChallenge. We asked our employees to come up with solutions to prevent falls and The Beechwood proposed a new program that will measure sleep quality to improve physical and cognitive function of our residents. We're grateful for the dedication of our frontline teams to improve the lives of older adults. Congratulations!

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalization of Canadian seniors. Up to 30 per cent of seniors fall each year. Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for much of eastern Canada. Older adults and children are particularly vulnerable to the high temperatures so here are some simple tips to help stay cool and safe:
1) Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of cool water 2) Enjoy some cold snacks like popsicles or frozen fruit 3) Place a cool towel on the back of your neck 4) Keep your blinds closed at home to keep the sun out 5) Wear light coloured cotton clothing 6) Take a cool shower 7) Visit a public location with air conditioning such as a recreation centre, senior centre, library, or mall

As young children we’re all taught to treat our parents with respect. When parents get older, however, they sometimes find that the roles are reversed and their grownup children sometimes treat them as if they’re one of their own sons or daughters. Hazel McCallion, Revera’s Chief Elder Officer, offers her advice on how adult children can talk to their aging parents.
