Redwood Park Communities has started a series of podcasts called Stories Without a Home, where brave individuals from our community have come forward to tell their stories. Hey everyone! International women's day is coming up on March 8th, and the woman and children's shelter of Barrie has organized a march and entire event for that day! Please visit their website and share with everyone you know. It's such an important day for bringing women together in our community.
Pulling Roots thanks the Women and Children's shelter for organizing such an amazing and important event. They do great work in this community and deserve more funding for what they do. Pulling Roots gives a huge thanks to the front line workers who do so much for the women and children of Barrie.

Kassidi was just 20 years old when she took her own life, four months after being sexually assaulted. Support services were not readily available for Kassidi; she was placed on a four month wait list for counselling, and took her own life just weeks before her first appointment. This occurred here in Simcoe County.

The X-Protest
We will not remain silent. Our aim is to show survivors that we hear them and we believe them, to hold politicians to a higher standard of behaviour, and to challenge harmful myths.
For this protest, we are encouraging you to wear a taped "x" over your mouth to represent the silencing of survivors and the impact of leaders remaining silent on the issues of sexual violence.
This event is taking place peacefully and quietly during a Barrie City Council meeting to send a message and encourage dialogue.
We will also be dropping a banner while sitting in the stands so that Council will hear our message.
We will leave behind a few brochures busting myths about sexual violence and violence against women in Canada, and will then go leave some down at Hooligan's - which is part-owned by Patrick Brown.
Background
In the wake of the allegations of sexual assault against former PC Leader and current Simcoe North MPP Patrick Brown, and his subsequent immediate resignation, there has been a vocal backlash against the women leveling these allegations.
Social media has been alight with sympathy for Brown and support for “men’s rights” by those who fear the pendulum has swung too far with the #metoo movement. The incident has unleashed a torrent of invective against those “anonymous accusers” who “ruin” the lives of respectable men on the whim of “mere say-so [1] ”. The target? Women. An online petition [2] for the Simcoe North MPP, titled “Justice for Patrick Brown” which aims to punish false allegations and “bring justice to MEN again” has gathered over 10,000 signatures, including that of Barrie Ward 2 Councillor Rose Romita [3] and Springwater Ward 4 Councillor Sandy McConkey. Patrick Brown’s own response on Twitter has been to feebly praise the #metoo movement while denouncing “false accusations” and promising to deliver “the truth”. We don’t have a problem of false accusations - we have a problem of normalizing violence against women and girls.
The organizers have observed the current climate of backlash, where women are being blamed for the downfall of powerful men for voicing abuses. We have seen the effect this has had in deterring dissent and menacing the accusers themselves.
We are deeply alarmed by the absence of real leadership, particularly local leadership, in calling out this misogyny. We are concerned that the absence of a counter-voice, especially in Patrick Brown’s own riding, is contributing to an environment that is decidedly hostile towards women who make confidential reports of sexual violence, promotes victim-blaming, silences sexual violence survivors, and allows violence against women and girls to thrive.
