Kinettes Ignite Hope for CF at Annual Fundraising Walk Sun streamed through the rain clouds yet again to invigorate participants and volunteers for the 2018 Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History on Sunday May 27th at Hersey Lake.
Members of the Kinette Club of Timmins were the first to arrive to set up tables of supplies and food to greet the walkers. Throughout the morning, teams with names like “Team Melissa Beaudry,” “Team Kaylee”, “Feisty, Witty, Nattie,” and the “Turkey Turcotte Troops” registered and submitted their fundraising envelopes as anticipation built for the 11 a.m. walk around the lake.
Over the past 14 years, the walk has raised 29 million dollars for Cystic Fibrosis nationally. All funds raised through the national walk supports research, healthcare, advocacy, and new therapies.
Before the walk, Kin Canada National Vice-President, Dr. Erin Thomson addressed the crowd: “We are so incredibly thankful because truly, the control and cure for CF is just around the corner, and that’s because of all of the work that everyone has done. The Kinette Club of Timmins is thrilled to host this event as a reminder of our commitment to find a cure or a control for CF.”
Cystic Fibrosis Regional Executive Director for Ontario North and East, Hilary Evans, thanked everyone present for their efforts. “It was my pleasure to be here in this wonderful community,“ she said. The reason for her visit was to honour top individual fundraiser Mariette Gordon with a special recognition. Her attendance was a surprise to the Kinette Club of Timmins as well. They were honoured with Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s’ Outstanding Community Partner Award’ for their continued efforts to raise funds through the walk, their annual Christmas Auction, Rock ‘N Bowl, and Pubb Putt. “These ladies work tirelessly all year long to raise funds for CF as well as all of the other events they hold in support of Community needs,” Evans said. The surprise award was met with smiles, laughter, and a few very happy tears from the Kinettes.
As the clouds started to gather, each team was thanked, and each CF Warrior was gifted a bunch of daisies, the CF flower of hope. With the walk complete, bellies full of BBQ and cupcakes, the fundraising total was announced. National Vice President Erin gleefully proclaimed the Timmins total: $34,000.00! Thunderous applause broke out when she added, “We won’t stop because you don’t stop! Eventually CF will stand for ‘Cure Found’!”
