This photo was taken by a local counsellor in Washington Square Park, New York City on Sunday, October 1. The creator's name is Lily. It takes just one person to tell the world #Ibelievesurvivors. It takes one survivor to connect with others to shout #metoo. It takes all of us to say #TimesUp #webelievesurvivors. If you need to talk , call us at 1-866-298-7778 anytime or chat with us online at kawarthasexualassaultcentre.com on weekends 7-11 pm. You can also drop in to the Centre at 150 King Street, 3rd floor, Peterborough weekdays to connect or share your ideas for arts-based activism. We are here to listen.
We will be hosting a MENding Conversation Group this winter for men who want to join in the conversation about ending gender based violence. Email Ted at tlohrenz@kawarthasac.ca for more information.
Please note that we are experiencing telephone difficulties today. Email us at ksac@nexicom.net for service. We apologize for this delay.
"Testimony in a sexual assault case – which relies on a survivor’s willingness to provide it – has the power to make an unknown and often serious incident visible. Without the victim’s story, it can remain a secret, hidden forever.
Sexual assaults rarely have witnesses outside of the victim and the offender; in the Brett Kavanaugh and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford case, an external witness resisted participating and then was not even called to appear.
To the public, it can seem the answer to ending sexual assault is to simply encourage victims to come forward and help them understand how to do so. But few sexual assaults are ever reported – much less go to trial."
- Nicole Pietsch, Coordinator, Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres

It can be difficult to understand why people who are living with psychological, physical, financial, emotional and sexual abuse don't 'just leave,' but it can take an average 11 times (statistic shared by the YWCA Peterborough START Program), and a community of support to overcome barriers of stigma and shame, finance, safe spaces for children and pets, and love. National housing strategies and domestic violence legislation help survivors leave abusive situations. If you need support, there are three places that offer all services in one spot in this region: START at the YWCA Peterborough, BRIDGES at Women's Resources in Lindsay, and THRIVE at Cornerstone Family Violence Centre in Cobourg. Contact us at 1-866-298-7778 for more details.
Thought we might share a song that is getting us through the news, twitter and politics today. We send you empowering thoughts and are always here at 1-866-298-7778 if you need to talk. What is your power song today?

Thank you so much to the hundreds of people who joined us in Peterborough, Haliburton, Cobourg and Lindsay last night! What an exceptional experience!
Finishing my community nursing placement here in the next couple of weeks. This placement has given me an incredible amount of new knowledge that will help me in every aspect of my nursing career. The staff are incredible, and the work that they are doing for the community and individuals is vital. Awesome experience, awesome place!
Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre is a fantastic organization. They have provided me with the student placement of a lifetime, I have gained so much confidence and knowledge since beginning here. The people who work here are kind, and proud of what they do. It was an amazing experience, thank you so much.
Unprofessional staff. Couldn't get a clear answer to a simple question over the phone. Counselor laughed inappropriately during sessions. Seemed to lack experience and knowledge. Would not recommend this centre to anyone. Soon after my bad experiences I was informed by a friend that the centre actually has a history of messing more people up than helping, I wasn't surprised.
Can be hard to hear about groups/events before they happen. They're pretty great if you can partake.
Also found the counsellors weren't experienced enough to help with my levels of trauma in therapy The hospital ended up better for proper therapy (there is a big diff between counselling and therapy)
As a nursing student who recently completed a community placement at Kawartha Sexual Assault Center (KSAC), I am pleased to say that both the environment and staff provided a valuable and unforgettable learning experience. The staff is welcoming, non-judgmental, supportive and a wealth of knowledge. KSAC not only provided me with a stimulating learning opportunity, they also provided a healing opportunity, that promoted self-acceptance and self-growth. I will be eternally grateful to KSAC for the exciting new journey they helped me begin.
If you have been or know someone who has been affected by sexual violence/assault, I encourage you to contact KSAC and enlist them as partners in your/their journey. They are on your side and want to help promote healing. I also encourage those of you who are have an interest in this issue to join KSAC and/or your regional sexual assault center in their support and advocacy work by spreading their message. We must work together to end sexual violence.
It is a social problem that requires a social solution.
