A Father/Son day on the Bow River that I will NEVER forget!
I have been extremely fortunate over the years to experience what the Bow River has to offer especially with the direction and support of multiple professional guides.
Knowing fly fishing is such a passion of mine, I couldn’t wait until my son showed interest and wanted to join me on the river.
Well, that day came and on March 31st Dana Lattery (Fly Fishing Bow River Outfitters) guided Leo and myself down the river. Despite the chilly weather we were so excited about what the day may bring! After an informative boat safety discussion and personal casting lesson we were off!
Drifting down the river I paused multiple times to truly absorb the moments that presented. Listening to our guide and how he navigated the water while explaining how and where to place our flys was remarkable. I could tell Leo was soaking in Dana’s suggestions as he was casting and even mending really well as the day went on.
After a few hours passed, it happened..Leo hooked into his first fish on the Bow River!
His energy and excitement was out of this world and when his rainbow trout was netted the cheers began! His smile was ear to earand so was mine!
After a few pictures were taken we realized that there were many firsts.first guided float together, first time catching a fish on a fly rod, and to top it off Leo’s fish was caught on a fly he learned how to tie from Thursday Night Live which is hosted by Tim Hepworth and Dana Lattery from Fly Fishing Bow River Outfitters.
Dana asked Leo if he was done fishing now that he caught his rainbow and within a second.oh no, I’m ready to go!
We then continued down the river with such excitement and anticipation and if the day wasn’t already amazing enough I was shortly guided into a beautiful Brown Trout!
What an end to such a memorable day!
Thank you Dana for your patience, support and most of all your ability to provide a experience that has turned this day into a lifetime memory!
I can’t wait to book a Fly Fishing Bow River Outfitters trip this summer!!!
9th birthday he was all geared up
We are somewhat new to fly fishing and live in the heart of Calgary so we wanted to start getting out on the Bow more often to better experience the world class fishery right in our backyard. We made the decision to utilize a guide in order to learn as much as possible. After some research and a great discussion with Dana Lattery during which he outlined their philosophy of guiding, we landed on Fly Fishing Bow River Outfitters. We joined Tim Hepworth for our first guided float trip on August 17th.
It was 30+ degrees and sunny; a beautiful day to be out on the water, but not typically considered great for fishing. However, Tim still put us on numerous fish, and we each landed our first (of several) Bow Bullets and even a first Brown. Not to mention all the takes, losses, refusalsmore than enough to keep us having a blast all day.
Here are the two main points we took away from the day:
1) Tim was an absolute professional the entire time. He was always on, making sure everything was quick and seamless, yet he never made anything feel stressful, even when we tangled up for the 100th time.
2) Tim never tired of our questions and thirst for knowledge. In fact it was quite the opposite and he was more than willing to share his expertise on fishing strategies, including different times of year, different water levels, and even different rivers.
In the end, we learned far more about fishing the Bow than we could have hoped. But the day was so much more than just the technical fishing aspect So we will definitely be back!
If anyone out there is looking for the this type of experience, the team of Pros at Fly Fishing Bow River Outfitters will far surpass your expectations!
Thanks for the awesome day!
