Last week was the last week for many graduates from our Humber Media Studies programs. For the graduating Advertising & Graphic Design, Graphic Design, Copywriter students, the Zero Show marked the end of an era and preparation for a new chapter in their lives. In the buzzing room where agency professionals mingled with faculties, students and their families, they explored each others’ creative talents, ambitious attitudes, and talked about the exciting future ahead. We couldn’t be more proud of these hard working, kind, and talented individuals and wish them the best!!

We had the honour of speaking to the program coordinator of the Advertising & Graphic Design Program. She had some great advice for our next year's returning students.
"I advise the students to immerse themselves in campus life, to become involved and experience as much as they can. The experiences and networks they form now, will set the foundation for their future — above all they should enjoy whatever they undertake."
Thank you Catherine for taking the time to inspire us! Let's end this school year right!

Many of us are close to our Internship days, and when it comes to interviews and gaining a job in the real world, what can Strategy Online’s Top 30 Under 30 Vino Jeyapalan say to help our students?
“The company is making a risk on hiring someone, a resume gets them only so much information, an interview gets them only so much information, they can only pull more information when they hire them and see them in action.
You have to confront your weaknesses in the interview. After mine, I drafted three reasons on why they shouldn’t hire me, and then guaranteed 100% of their money back if they weren’t satisfied with me and I was hired.
I’m not suggesting everyone to do the same, but there’s always a level of uncertainty when you move to the next stage, it’s not going to be simple, or linear. Build confidence and be resourceful. ”

At a conference Zuckerberg once again took responsibility for the policies that led to as many as 87 million users having their data improperly used by the British data firm Cambridge Analytica; he says a multiyear effort is necessary to recover. http://www.adweek.com/…/mark-zuckerberg-says-it-will-take-…/
Nominate someone who you think has GRIT by tagging them in comments, ina few sentences tell us why and #buildingfhumber and they can be featured in the Hall of Famers!!
They must be a Humber Student or Faculty to be featured, good luck to everyone!

Fanshawe College's renewable energies technician program allows students to see how electricity is being generated through a turbine. The technician based program encourages familiarization on existing systems, as well as newer forms of energy production like Bio Gas; a process by which waste products/organics are contained, and the methane is extracted to turn a turbine. Kudos to Fanshawe College, for making productive steps towards clean energy production! #ONpoli #ONCollegeDay
Loyalist College is the only Ontario College with a License to analyze cannabis. They've designed analytic tools to measure CO2 and O2 levels not only in medicinal cannabis but also in beer, allowing the fast-growing craft brewery scene a more cost-effective method of determining quality! What an amazing day for amazing people. The world has a plan for every single person living in it. It’s up to us to see the potential. As midterms wrap up, take a second to breathe. Come up for air. Remember how lucky we are to be able to learn and grow with talented people. We make a better place to live when people with Down Syndrome are able to participate fully in the development of life and society with others. #worlddownsyndromeday
It’s time to announce our BuildingFHumber #HallofFamer again! And this time we had the pleasure to speak with the winner of the Zulu Agency 40k Paid Internship Freya MacIsaac. She came out on top amongst hundreds of applicants in universities and colleges and we asked her to share some insights with us:
What did you learn from this experience?
Interacting with a brand behind the scenes could bring insights you’d never imagine you’d come across. We have to be gathering information from every resource we can get our hands on.
What advice do you have for students working on their internships?
As we’ve all been told, agencies are seeking candidates that will fit within their company culture. Interviews and open book opportunities shouldn’t feel like blind dates. I think it’s important to do the research on the people, work, and agencies that catch your eye. This sounds like an obvious notion, but with all the stresses and deadlines this time of year, it gets put on the backburner.
Congratulations Freya for the internship and representing Humber! :D
In the constantly changing industry of supermarkets and grocery stores, companies are looking for ways in which they can simplify their customers experience. Costco is now considering the introduction of grocery delivery, an idea similar to that of metrolinx partnership with Loblaws to allow commuters to have their groceries ready for them at their destination. It is with great pleasure we congratulate the winners of the Grip Orange Juicer competition! Teams Initial and Abracadabra, both from Humber College placed 2nd and 3rd in this year’s Apprenticeship Program. BuildingF’s very own Felicia Guthrie was part of team Abracadabra and made her school proud. Congratulations to team Two-Four representing Seneca College. Humber College will be back for gold next year! Thank you to everyone that participated and for producing amazing work.
“Great leaders create more leaders, not followers.”
We had the opportunity to attend the Cannes Lions: See It Be It, a speaker event led by Susan Boyle; Global Chief Creative Officer of FCB Global where we enjoyed talks and panels that included some of the most prestigious female leaders in the Ad Industry such as Helen Pak; President of Grey Toronto, and Lisa Greenberg; Creative Director of Leo Burnett Worldwide just to name a few, and here are 12 of their greatest insights about creativity and leadership:
1. Diversity comes first.
2. Networking is about sharing, we’re too worried about the portfolio, we should be looking for the individuals instead.
3. Look at who you’ll be surrounded by, will they support you?
4. Everyone has the potential to change the world.
5. Find a mentor. Be a mentor.
6. The most simple solution is the best one.
7. When you’re a leader, you’re letting go of your ego, it’s not about you anymore.
8. Stop chasing the title, it’s about the quality you show. 9. To be a great leader, you need to be equal Farmer (nurturing), Diplomat (open to conversations), and Ninja (protective of idea).
10. This is a business of results.
11. If you’re waiting for someone else to define your career, you’ll be wasting your time.
12. Seize when you’re young, one day, one week, one weekend, can change your whole career.
