Athletes of the Week: Amanda Sullivan & Kevin Chau
After being told on the bus ride to Hillfield Strathallan College that she would not be playing in her familiar position as setter for the Division 1 Jr. Girls' Volleyball team, Upper One student Amanda Sullivan took the opportunity at the power position to show off a dominating attack and her hits were almost unstoppable. As the match went on, she grew more and more comfortable with this position showcasing not only her newly developed attacking skill, but the ability to adjust to a new position on short notice. Amanda is an outstanding athlete, but most importantly an outstanding teammate - always supportive, always positive, always team first!
Upper One student Kevin Chau had back-to-back outstanding games - he helped the Jr. Division 1 Boys' Basketball team secure their first victory of the season during Appleby's Winter Community Weekend against Trinity College School. He scored 12 points, had double digit assists, and had a number of key steals that helped the Blue Dogs win. More recently, Kevin played the best game of the season against the best team in the league, Crestwood Preparatory College. He scored 25 points! His performance was instrumental in forcing the game to go into overtime. Kevin approaches each game with great intensity, vision, and skill, but his most admirable trait is the respect he has for his teammates, for his opponents and for the game.

On January 25 and 26 the Appleby community enjoyed all things Canadian! Highlights of the weekend included inflatable games, athletics games, a faculty variety show, Appleby's Got Talent, a presentation by a mentalist and a lumberjack breakfast. It was a fantastic time for the community to come together and demonstrate our Appleby spirit.

Middle School, Upper School and Senior One parents are encouraged to attend a curriculum information session on Tuesday, February 19 or Thursday, February 21 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Members of Appleby's guidance department will present information on next year's courses and the course selection process. Each year, Appleby carefully reviews its academic program and makes changes and additions to improve our students' learning experience.
Parent-teacher conferences will also take place on Tuesday, February 19 and Thursday, February 21 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Parents whose last name begins with A through L are encouraged to attend on February 19. Parents whose last name begins with M through Z are encouraged to attend on February 21. You will receive an e-mail prior to the sessions asking you to confirm your attendance and you are encouraged to RSVP.

On January 18, in preparation for the Upper One English Indian Horse unit, Appleby's Upper One students and faculty welcomed Sherry Saevil, Indigenous Education Advisor to the Halton Catholic District School Board. Ms. Saevil facilitated a blanket exercise, an interactive educational program that teaches the history of indigenous peoples in Canada.

Thank you to Appleby's student councils for running wonderful events during United Way Week (January 14 to 18). The Appleby community enjoyed new activities such as the Art Council D(Arts) and the Upper School Jar Guess, as well as returning events like the Powell's House Breakfast, Walker Thrift Shop Fashion Show and Colleyoke. The week-long fundraiser highlighted different United Way Halton and Hamilton organizations including Halton Multicultural Council, Empowerment Squared and Halton Food for Thought. The total funds raised for the United Way Halton & Hamilton was over $5,550. Congratulations!

On December 13 and 18, Middle Two students welcomed guest artist Karen Harwood from Studiostone Creative. Based on their learning of Inuit soapstone carving, each student carved, sanded, waxed and polished soapstone to produce an amazing arctic animal. Students were delighted with the results they achieved learning about the subtractive process.

There is a lot of activity taking place inside the A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life! The building is scheduled to be closed in and weatherproofed this week, while roofing, installation of the curtain wall and skylights are well underway. Interior finishing also continues as masonry, drywall and ceramic tile are all installed, along with HVAC, plumbing, sprinklers and electrical systems.

I was enrolled in Appleby College in the late 60's. It was a horrible experience. I am glad they have improved thier program. I was beat for smoking and introduced to drugs but because I wasn't an athelete I was ignored by the staff when they knew I was involved with drugs. I was given corpral punishment for smoking, was beat with a leather belt by a prefect who also smoked on school grounds. A very double standard.
Just had a very nice talk with the Alumni rep Tracy Pearce-Dawson about my post on the Appleby web site. That was then and this is now. I am very concerned about what people are asking for now, they want to remove all statues in the USA that relate to embarassing historical events and in Canada we are looking at removing Sir John A MacDonald because of his beliefs and life style. To many name changes to list here re the history in Canada. Just Google it.
We need to hold on to our history to appreciate how far we have come. Example is Appleby College. We the old boys who were pushed aside because we weren't athletic have risen to be law abiding and productive citizens because of the morals we were introduced to in our early years, yes even some morals we did aquire at Appleby college.
So after a very pleasant talk with Tracy I am leaving my post up for the present students to read and appreciate how lucky they are to attend Appleby College. Appleby College is taking the leadership roll in education and world involvment to a new level.response / report this review -
