If you're looking for something a bit off the beaten track Rio Frio Cave in Mountain Pine Ridge Preserve is the place for you. Located an hour and a half drive just to the south of the town of San Ignacio the cave is a gem to all foreigner tourists and locals alike. It's an easy drive in with a 4×4, but others should be cautious. Once there a beautiful cavernous world awaits you.

Super neat cave, not the best roads to get there but once at the cave the path is sturdy and offers very nice views. The cave has two entrances, the first is quite large and the second is inaccessible unless you want to get wet. Bring a flashlight as the far end of the cave can be dark and there are a few places where falling would be very unpleasant.

This is a neat spot for a quick stop, usually on your way to Caracol or the Pine Mountain Reserve. Huge cave with a stream going through - not very long so it only takes 20 minutes or so to explore the entire thing. It's at a beautiful spot deep in the jungle and has a very exotic feel to it.

Take the trip. It is absolutely worth it. The Mayans believed the stalactites were roots from the trees extending to the underworld.
