Great short walk around the rim, terrific views all around back to Mt Gambier, South to Port MacDonnell and along the coast. Small shelter with a bbq, public toilets also at the car park

Just finished the easiest trail which ends at the top of crater. Easier than expected and the view is breathtaking. Will try to get to the bottom of the crater next time.

Mount Schank offers a picturesque view of the surrounding areas, when you reach the high points of the volcanoes edges, revealing a vast view of the country side. Looking inwards to the extinct volcano is the usual Australian bush wildlife and fauna that i'd expect you would find at most other parks and reserves. The trail is isolated and quite narrow at stages, with some sections moving through tight squeezes through the rocks; so i wouldn't recommend the walk if you're not prepared for a tight squeeze a few times through the walk. Along with the standard trail around the crater's edge, you have the option of going down to the very bottom of the volcano, however, the trail down there is narrow and at the bottom you won't find much at all except a ground up view of the crater from within. Along with the standard customary tourist information boards, to educate yourself in the volcano, it provides an ample escape for the duration of your walk around the volcano, which is the high point of my experience. Like i said, there isn't much interesting fauna to see apart from the usual, but it has an arresting view when you reach the high points, and it is a nice experience for a short escape.

Us and the kids loved the walk up and the walk around. Definitely take water and a snack. But our 3.5 and 5.5 yr olds did fine walking the whole trip.

A must for the kids! An extinct volcano you can climb in 10 minutes, walk around the rim and climb into. One of Australia's great undiscovered tourist destinations.

Great hike, very surprised as it didn't look like much from the carpark. I'm not the fittest and I managed it OK. Just bring water and good footwear.

The walk up and around the rim of the volcano isn't too challenging and is definitely a must. Great exercise and superb views from the top.

Beautiful, first time walking on the crater of a ancient volcano. The hike was really interesting because before visiting I had the opportunity to watch a documentary on the volcanoes in Mt. Gambier.

Great little hike. The crater itself is very impressive. Perfectly round.

Great opportunity to walk up to and around a dormant volcano.. Not for the faint hearted - there are a LOT of steps UP and some of the path around the crater is narrow and 'gravelly' - could be an issue for older or frail travellers but well worth the effort for those who are up to it. Great views of the surrounding countryside from the top of the crater.
