Absolutely fantastic food! Very cozy place with a good environment. Their ramen is delicious and the ice cream was beyond incredible. Amazing choices available on the menu. Will definitely be going back here again.

My favourite Japanese restaurant in Joburg. Best ramen ever, and all the other food is always excellent too.

Hmm, what did I miss?? My experience just doesn’t match the majority of the reviews (which I why I tried Yamato today). Not to say I had a bad experience, but the rave reviews set the bar very high and I ended up disappointed. So what was good? Well, the food was ok - not bad at all, but definitely not amazing. Among other not very memorable things I had, my beef teriyaki was perfectly cooked, very tender and nicely spiced. But it came on “flowery” plate (like something out of The 70’s Show) and all that came with it were shriveled, obviously overlooked, rather oily carrots and beans. There was no starch - the egg fried rice (very good) was a very expensive extra. But otherwise the place is really unremarkable. It’s much, much smaller inside than I expected, has almost no Japanese decor to “set the scene”. It’s very plainly decorated, and with no background music, there was basically no ambiance. Service was ok, but dishes were brought out at varying times, leaving some in the party staring at empty places while others completely finished their 1st courses. The menu is huge maybe we just didn’t order the right things, but overall a very underwhelming experience. Having said that, the dessert menu is tiny and other than the green tea ice cream is completely uninspiring. My two scoops of vanilla ice cream could easily have come out of a tub from Pick ‘n Pay. And it’s very over priced, to be honest - expect to speed R450-R500 per person, more if you order alcohol. You get way better value at Jungle, Yamitsuki, etc. Glad I tried it, but probably won’t be back. Disappointing relative to all the rave reviews.

Such a stunning restaurant we stumbled into per chance. The whole experience was authentic and thoroughly enjoyed. The food was fresh and full of flavor. We tried the Japanese beer which was great. The service was great. The manager was interactive and friendly. I highly recommend a visit to the restaurant.

One of only two authentic Japanese places, owned and run my Japanese. The pork Gyoza is excellent, and the Ramen is great!

Certainly Johannesburg's best Japanese restaurant, and perhaps one of its best overall restaurants too.

The food is pricey, but well worth it for quality. The service, while not excellent, isn't outright bad either- however, for the premium prices, it would not be unreasonable to expect better service.

There are quite a few gems in the menu, but the Chicken Kara-ge (starter) & the Nabayaki Udon (main) deserve especial mentions.

The one big area of improvement for Yamato remains the venue. While the overall location is central, convenient and excellent, the cold and sterile building itself leaves much to be desired. It doesn't feel nearly as intimate an experience as one would expect from such 優れた (excellent) cuisine.

That, however, is certainly not reason enough to miss this gastronomical delight!
