Although the entrance to the Kranzkloof Nature Conservancy is somewhat hidden in amongst the forest canopy, this is one of the trails through the Kranzkloof Nature Reserve. Be careful, however, when traversing this trail as it takes you through a lovely forest area but if you go off the trail, you may suddenly find yourself on the edge of a sheer cliff.

This is a great rock-climbing spot courtesy of these sheer cliffs, but please do not come alone. Although the Mountain Club Rescue Society is very accomplished and a number of its most active members live in the Upper Highway area, it is never pretty if you fall off the Kloof Gorge.

Courtesy of the river and the generally damp, misty atmosphere of the Kloof Gorge (home to numerous orchids and ferns) this is also midge and mosquito heaven, so do come well prepared with sprays and ointments.

The trail you follow will take you directly under the Ammazulu Palace, then around along the grassland of the 'Spur" that sticks out into the Gorge and is visible from the Kloof Viewing Site in Bridle Road, then it takes you down into a river and past a waterfall and from thence up a hill and into the Uve Car Park area of Kranzkloof Nature Reserve. If you have two vehicles, you can park one at Uve Car Park and the other in Windsor Road and then drive back.

This trail takes you through the Sandstone Sourveld grassland and through the scrub forest and you see the riverine forest of the Gorge below. A lovely walk that is mostly downhill - or you can do it the other way round from the Uve Car Park in which case it is mostly uphill. Either way, a sunset picnic at the Spur is highly recommended. Just do use sun-block and loads of mozzie spray.
