Fantastic setting. Clean friendly and efficient. They recycled they provide fresh farmed cos milk. Beautiful hikes from the front door. Great location to explore the Drakensberg. Good restaurant for food. 20km away all major shopping can be done.

Very nice accommodation and friendly, efficient staff. The food is absolutely amazing, would definitely recommend making a dinner reservation if you are staying here. The gift shop supports local artisans, but it is hectically expensive.

Owner is super friendly. When we were there there was no electricity and also no water due to a power outage. I can live without power, but no water is kind of difficult. Room was leaking as well. We left after one night 3 stars since the owner was super nice.

Great stay. Just some issues with electricity and water which they resolved to the best of their abilities. Great place for a stop over, would definitly recommended it.

Nice clean hostel offering tours of Sani Pass and surrounding area. Great value for money and nice restaurant. Wifi finishes about 830pm when restaurant closes

Good location for basing hikes into the Drakensberg from here. The staff are knowledgeable and can assist in planning routes, getting the necessary permits and maps. The backpackers itself is good, dorms were pleasant enough and the communal area is sociable.

One of my favourite backpackers in SA, usually a good mix of local and international travellers, great communal and self catering area but also a good budget catering service. And of course the best outdoor shower in the country.

Avoid this place.
We slept in a construction site: we breathed paint and cement and random workers showed up in our rooms in the morning. It was both unhealthy and unsafe.
The water in the shower was freezing and there was no heating in our rooms.
When we told the owner about this she called us liars. She is incredibly rude and just wants her cash.
There is also no internet anywhere near the rooms or the sitting room and kitchen.
You should find another place to stay.

I stayed at Sani Lodge Backpackers for 7 nights and had a wonderful experience! The staff were helpful and friendly, and the accommodations were clean and comfortable. Not to mention the beautiful surroundings! Sani Lodge is eco friendly, recycling and composting all waste and conserving water wherever possible. They have cows on site and provide fresh milk daily to guests as well as fresh butter and yogurt to guests buying breakfast. Dinners at the Lodge are delicious 3-course meals served in the dining room and fair trade wine is available as well. If the dining room isn't your thing there is also a fully equipped kitchen and herb garden for your enjoyment.

Another wonderful reason to stay at Sani Lodge are the owners, Russell and Simone. Aside from being an eco friendly location the owners also have other socially conscious programs in place. Such as volunteering at the local primary school Kwapitela. If a guest volunteers there for a week they receive free accommodation. As someone who volunteered there I would highly recommend it. The students are lovely and the need is enormous! Do a good deed while you travel! If daytime volunteering cuts into your hiking you can also give your time in the evening tutoring the children of the Sani Lodge staff. They are absolutely adorable and super eager to learn! Kids from both volunteer programs were excited to have us there and enjoyed playing games with us and singing and dancing for/with us at the end of class.

Please stay at Sani Lodge if you get the chance. They are such a wonderful organization. I really can't recommend them enough. And if you like tours Sani Lodge has a lot to offer. From multi-day hikes, pony tours, and forays into Lesotho, they have excellent guides who are knowledgeable and full of cultural insight. I wish I could have stayed there forever. My only minor complaint would be that the wifi was located in an inconvenient location.

Our Sani Pass tour ended up being prolonged, because our cheap broke down on the pass. We ended up walking some of the way. Not so much as a courtesy e-mail from management after the tour ended. The guides did their best trying to keep the tour spirit up. Pay a bit extra for the more expensive tour company.
