I was here attending a conference and i have to say the level of professionalism displayed by the staff is phenomenal. It made the whole experience worthwhile. The food was also amazing.

Internet access was horrible. There was barely hot water. Just a couple of the staff were very unfriendly. I won't be staying at this hotel again.

Wonderful vibe and friendly staff. Offers complimentary shuttle to guests around Sandton. The fitness centre well kitted out w basic cardiovascular and weights, plus changerooms.

Rooms are very comfortable with a fridge and desk for business travellers.

If you're looking for brand new this isn't your hotel You have to appreciate old-world charm to like this place. 2 pools with beautiful greenery. Good A/C. A friend got a suite which was great looking

Impressive front entrance and valet parking. Lovely lobby full of beautiful, fresh flowers and nice furniture. Friendly, helpful and professional staff. Once inside though, like a labyrinth and very hard to find a room. Rooms are rather small and can do with a makeover to make it more trendy. However, the absolute worst part about this place, is the entrance from the basement parking into the hotel. It is impersonal and unfriendly - not a single soul in sight, only tired looking couches and a dry, dusty flower arrangement. And on top of that, being confronted with the nauseating smell of trash, drains and damp. And then suddenly, one tends to forget the impressive front entrance

Beautiful honeymoon suite, I love meat but this time around didn't enjoy my meal. I hate steak tar tar. Loved my breakfast and the friendly aged lady Mama Ednah who has been with the hotel for the past 25years. The carpet needs changing @ The Colony.

Hotel is very old, kind of scary for me. Most of staff are nice, though some are not. Keep talking to colleague and ignoring me standing right in front of her. And she said she will solve my problem and call me or ask a guy come to my room to check. Never receive a call and nothing. Problem remains. Worst experience ever.

Very noisy room, hearing people walking, trolley passing. I couldn't sleep well.

Very enjoyable place to stay, pity i was there all too briefly. All staff were great, room very amenable. Just a problem with construction noise around and roads inaccessible.

Great location. Quaint hotel; a great place to relax very close to Mandela Square. The signage within the hotel is unintuitive. A bit difficult to find one's way around within the hotel, especially the lifts. Great for leisure travel; a business traveller might find a few details lacking. The Internet connection was patchy and promised 'call back' from the technical support never materialised. One needs to access five - seven switches to turn the lights off (two of which weren't working). Worn old fashioned rooms but they're nice and cozy in a way. The only 'Bar' is called Cigar and is, of course a smoking bar; think tobacco smell filled clothes in the suitcase. The only restaurant available for dinner is a steak house fashioned on the stock exchange; great theme but a very limited menu. All said, a very good hotel for leisure travel but not so much for business travellers.

Currently loud construction noises from large building built across the hotel not even across the road right in front of the rooms. When you ask management if they can do something about the noise, the best answer is would you like a inside room? Rooms are also on the older side and need some updating.

The best way to describe this hotel is "average." Nothing wrong with it, but the small details that make you want to return to a place are lacking. Location is very central, and the pool area should be amazing in the summer. Food and catering was very satisfactory.

Have only stayed at a Protea once before. Protea does not honor any of the benefits of marriott gold rewards members.

Dated small rooms. Grounds and public areas are beautiful. Fresh paint in some rooms which is still outgassing. Moved me to another room with a shared Patio.. I didn't want to complain and seem like a snob but no value to having a balcony if it is shared and overlooks the backyard of a local resident and there is a sign asking to not leave the door open.

Asked three times if they could at least provide a room that didn't have a shared balcony as I didn't feel comfortable sharing a balcony with a stranger. Twice told, yes we will work on it. Third time, they offered me the same room as when I got here (i.e. with the paint smell).

I took the receptionist up and asked if he could smell the paint..and he replied yes. Asked , then why did you offer me the same room again.

The Hotel has an amazing staff, with some of the best service around. The public areas of the hotel are styled in English Colonial, the fresh cut flowers in the foyer and piano man in the evenings were a treat. The hotel is just let down with dated rooms, intermittent wifi, no ironing facility.

At the Balalaika hotel you can feel the history of the British colonial era. There is a certain serenity surrounding the place.
I had an old school experience and I enjoyed it.

The hotel has been decorated in a very nice old world style. Has a nice garden. That too in the heart of sandton. It looks very small from the front. But it actually is quite big towards the back
