The actual departures lounge is very nice with plenty of shops and restaurants. Mugg and Bean is open 24/7 and is a great place to wait for a few hours. Out of Africa is a good shop. Not enough jet bridges so 250 pax had to be boarded from bus gates on VS601 one night.
Behind the scenes: oh dear. Not once have I connected through this airport without my suitcase being broken into and searched for any jewellery/valuables. The baggage handlers are thieves and I will never fly through Johannesburg again if I am able to. Next time I need to fly from London to Harare I'm not chancing it and I'm flying through Dubai. Shame on you, baggage handlers. You ruined a wedding present for my cousin by unwrapping it and tearing the box open.
Unless South Africa is your final destination, I can't recommend this airport at all. Better options include Dubai, Nairobi, Addis, driving, walking, and hopping whilst being repeatedly stabbed.
Very efficient airport. Definitely worth spending some time there while waiting to board your flight.
A different airport all together. You can find leather and other unique products which we can't find in any of the places around. Definitely worth to spend some quality time in this airport.
Not my favorite Airport in South Africa, but considering it is the busiest and biggest in Africa, it is doable. I have just come back from a business trip and have found that there is a lot more smiling faces and toilets are spotless.
Editing my review because I just forgot my cellphone in the toilet cubicle and one of the cleaners ran after me to hand it to me. Awesome!
Airport is great. Lots of shops and a fair few places to eat. Layout is good. Gave it 4 stars as the smoking lounge upstairs ruins it. Its like disco with the way too loud music. The staff are usually too busy practicing there dance moves and using their mobiles. Some staff have to be 'prompted' to give back your change. It needs serious attention from the management. Also the clock has been inaccurate by 27 minutes slow for over a year.
It’s by far the busiest airport in Africa. This makes it a gateway to Southern Africa as most long haul flights from overseas land and depart from here. The only bad thing is the noise of public announcements of late passengers. Apart from that the airport has all the features of a world class airport
World class airport and the best in Africa. Compared very well to the best Airports in the World. Friendly staff and shops everywhere to cater for your needs.
OR Tambo is world class and the most busiest airport in South Africa 🇿🇦 It is linked to the main highways and Gautrain making it easier to travel from point A to B without any hassles. While waiting to connect and board the flight to your next destination. There is an endless places to shop or having a meal with family or associates. There about two or three hotels within walking from the airport. Only downside, is that their security is sometimes very relaxed considering this is a national key point.,
Airport that serves South-Africa and the world very well. Security and Immigration systems was recently upgraded. Good selection of duty free shops and restaurants. All major frequent flyer loyalty programs have lounge facilities that cater for business travelers.
So good to be home after being away for a couple of months. Great airport layout with shops, coffee shops to hang out before your travel. Sadly the staff lets it down. Staff at immigration are not a great first impression on the country, looks like it's the last place on earth they want to be. Having the Gautrain station for the speed train right in there is super convenient.
One of the better airports in the world. International departures has a food selection of duty free shops. There are several places to eat throughout the airport. The baggae service is a bit slow so expect a bit of a wait when you arrive to get your bags
It's an airport nothing special here, all very basic. Everything has been on time and efficient though so I guess that's what matters most. Don't arrive early though expecting to have very many things to do.
The best airport ever. This airport is the best airport I ever seen.. They don't treat u like animals they show u love trust me is the best
Very nice and modern airport with amazing souvenir shops, although the airport itself is not so big. The selection of shops is really cool, I can assure you that. You can't get bored there while waiting for your next flight.
A nice smallish airport in JoBurg SA. We were flying in and out of Mozambique and Singapore. It had a nice selection of shops with unique South African and African arts, crafts and other unique items. Prices are just as in any international airport high. The bookstore had a great selection of books, and I enjoyed getting local rugby jerseys for my son and I at the sports shop. I particularly remember the super friendly staff here who would gather around me and chat. The business class lounge was nice, comfortable and well stocked.
