What an amazing and safe place to visit for free for a few hours to breathe in fresh air and recharge your batteries. Stretch your legs over a series of trails varying in length or do a combination, as they are all clearly-marked. Do some gentle climbing to be treated to a great view of the city. You don't need to be an archeology buff to marvel at the remnants of an ancient village and ponder over the interesting rock formations. Stop at the old farmhouse dating back to the 19th century and take a pic at the empty windows and finally, dip your feet in the waters at the not so Silent Pool, where there is space to picnic. There are a couple of toilets on some of the trails, but not with flushing water.
A little gem right in the middle of Johannesburg South. A perfect place to take the family and take a stunning walk through nature, see the wildlife and walk/run the various trails the Reserve offers. There's trails from about 4kms up to about 25kms depending on your fitness levels. A must for the weekend!
Wonderful hiking trails some easy some harder anything from 5kms or less and more than 10kms I saw lots of wildlife today as well Bokke, zebras, wildebeest etc
Awesome trails. Picnic and braai facilities by booking. Really neat and well kept reserve. A definite must see.
Very nice place, clean amenities well done. Excellent walks, you can choose your level of walk. Lol not for potential everest climbers! Perfect for the family.
Its a beautiful place just didnt like the fact that they didnt have enough parking. A great place nonetheless
This place really took me by surprise. There was a amazing amount of animalia present during our hike, Beautiful scenery also makes the trip on the one side is the urbanized city life of Johannesburg and the contrast on the other side being the open farm lands . I gave this four stars as it's free decently maintained and right near the heart of Jozi. One more thing the bird life is fairly good which indicates a healthy ecosystem in the area.
Often hike the shorter trails during the week and love the longer trails at the weekend. Perfect for the entire family. Very clean and well maintained so Kukus to the team. Take advantage of the outdoor gym as well. The very best of nature is around the corner and a real gem.
Good for a afternoon walk. The trails hardly qualify as hiking trails as they are not challenging at all. Wildebeest can be spotted here, among other animals. Free entrance and fairly close to joburg.
Well maintained. Excellent facilities! Beautiful landscape.
Beautiful, simple retreat where one can enjoy uncomplicated nature and take a hike/walk with friends. And it is FREE
5 out of 5. Exceptionally well managed. Kudos to the management team and everyone else who is putting in the time and effort to make such a spectacular "city nature reserve" available, free, to the public. Everything "just works", from the friendly security staff, secure parking, clean and well maintained ablutions, beautiful entrance and gardens to the reserve itself. The coffee shop (open on Sat, Sun and public holidays) is a welcome addition. The trails are fairly well marked out but if I have to find one small criticism - they can be confusing. There are too many little loops using so many colours its actually hard to distinguish between some of them. If you want to do a long walk/run, for example, you can't just follow the (for example) red trail. You'd need to join together the red, black, light blue, brown, dark blue, light green, dark green, orange loops. And as many of them seem to occasionally branch off only to loop back on themselves until you know the area, its easy to under or overestimate the time and distance on any given set of loops. And some of the information boards out on the trails are looking a little sad often just blank boards - presumably they once had information on them? But overall, these are just niggles. As I said: 5/5
I grew up in this magical place and you so close to nature yet so close to everything else too a 16km ride from jozi cbd to the wonders of nature and fresh clean air
We attempted one of the numerous hiking trails which wound it's way along the reserve's edge and up a steep hill. The landscape was a bit dull because of the harsh winter, but the descent on the way back through a valley was more and interesting. Be sure to bring lots of water.
