Look no farther for a tailormade Cape Town and Garden route experience!
Travelling as a couple with a 4-yr old child and being vegetarians, we dont prefer group tours as we like to have a more private experience and try a variety of activities.
So after lot of search on the internet,i zeroed in on this tour company " 34 south tours".Someone who will do customised private tours of eastern and western capes without making us bankrupt!
Its a husband-wife owned company in Cape Town. Laetitia is the planner/ coordinator and was responsible for all communications and making the bookings.Dirk was the driver plus guide. And the touring vehicle was a 8-seater VW Kombi minivan that was spacious and comfortable.
They specialise in private tours and have a few sample itineraries on their website but were flexible to accomodate all my requirements ( believe me, they were lots of these )eg driving through Swartberg Pass , starting the tour in Port Elizabeth and ending in Cape Town, visiting Volkswagen car factory in Uitenhage for a factory tour , visit SAMREC penguin rehabilitation centre in Port Elizabeth. And make all bookings for activities ( ziplining over waterfalls in Tsitsikamma, sharkcage diving in Mossel Bay, Zorgfontein walk with lions,Outeniqua powervan in George,Featherbed experience Knysna to name a few) and book accomodations as per my choice.
We stayed in a self-catering chalet in Addo national park ( the private game reserves werent for us as my child cannot go on game drives , also we may not get sufficient vegetarian options in the included meals) for 2 days, did all game drives in the tour vehicle and had excellent close range wildlife sightings.
Dirk was an excellent driver and was fast yet always safe. And prompt and punctual at the agreed times based on our convenience and timing of activities.
He was quite easygoing too, had a good sense of humour and was an interesting conversationalist during the long drives.
Moreover and very crucial for us, he acted as our child's babysitter ( and was very good at it too. My 4 yr old son totally bonded with him) during the adventure activities that only we 2 adults can participate in.He even took our son to Blasters playarea when we were sharkcage diving in Mossel Bay.
Also,I was so impressed with Laetitia's planning in such meticulous detail. She had provided Dirk with folders of bookings, map locations of all the unusual places we wanted to visit, contact details etc.
She had also provided us a clear breakup of trip costs. And only asked for accomodation deposit to be paid upfront and balance tour cost by cash/bank transfer just before start of tour.Over the course of 6 months of planning, several modifications (that she bore patiently with me),accomodation selection and booking, got to become good friends too and was looking forward to and got to meet her in Cape Town towards end of tour.Down-to-earth hardworking couple who love their country and strive for excellence in their business.
We were quite lucky with the weather throughout the 2 week tour in first half of May. Great views from Table mountain,Cape Point, Cape Agulhas, Swartberg pass etc.
Our route took us through Port Elizabeth-Addo National Park-Uitenhage - Stormsriver Tsitsikamma- Birds of Eden & Monkeyland-Plettenberg Bay-Knysna featherbed experience-Wilderness-Mossel Bay-George-Prince Albert via Meiringspoort-Swartberg pass to Oudtshoorn-Swellendam- Route 62 & Franschoek-Cape Town , city tour, waterfront, Table mountain, Groot Constantia cellar tour and wine tasting, Kirstenbosch botanical gardens-Cape Point & peninsula- Clarence Drive-Boulders bay penguins- Hermanus , Hemel-al-arde valley- Stanford, Beadarsdorp & Cape Agulhas- Cape Town airport.
All in all, an amazing experience where everything was perfect. Many thanks to Dirk and Laetitia for making our first experience of South Africa so great. I wholeheartedly recommend 34 south tours to everyone who would like a personal and unique experience of the Cape at their own pace and according to their own interests without having to pay through the nose for it.
Undoubtedly the best tour operator in the city, and possibly the country. 34 South Tours offer the best Cape Point and Cape Town tour, and the tour guides are brilliant - so passionate and friendly.
They also offer a wonderful seasonal whale watching in Hermanus tour, which will satisfy even the most discerning whale watching fanatic. Well done to Dirk and the rest of the 34 South Tours for great tours and a fantastic company!
