Good place to camp, nice people good swimming area for kids, shallow waters close to beach edge. Good spaces to camp in

If your into organized camping good place. They also supervise Craig lake state park. Great rustic spot. Check it out. If your looking for a good hike or a day at the beach they have you covered.

I have never been more disgusted in my life the showers are hardly cleaned and filthy especially when you stay there for four nights and use the same showers and notice long hair and dirt on it from your fist stay. On top of all this the dnr pissed me off because it felt like I couldn't camp due to them driving by every two seconds. I felt like my privacy was invaded I will never camp there again

If you like this kind of camping its ok. I like a more rustic setting. I also do not understand why you would pay for camping in the Upper Penn. when there is so much free state land that you can camp for free. Sites are very close together. Its over rated. Nice beach area and showers though.

One soap dispenser in the ladies bathroom?? And it's empty. Shower lights turn off at 1:00am, so after a late arrival and in the shower, it went black with no way of turning them back on. Then, saw on the bulletin board outside that the lights turn off from 1 a.m. until 6 a.m. daily. This would have been nice to laminate and put in the showers. It is near train tracks so the train was loud at 1:30 a.m. but luckily we were still awake. There are A LOT of kids here - maybe a good thing if you have kids however if you're looking for something quieter, this would not be the place. Good points- the lots are very large, however the fire pits are pushed away over on the lot line so it's practically on the neighbors lot which was also right next to our neighbors tent.

What a beautiful park! Great beach on a huge lake. Would like to come back when the weather is more suitable for swimming and sunbathing. We had rain!

Beautiful old S.P. on pretty (and big) Lake Michigamme. Lots of mature trees and a nice modern restroom. BUT, a very loud train whistle will be heard twice daily, and it's pretty annoying.

One of the best, yet unknown, state parks in Michigan. Van Riper is located in a great spot west of Marquette and we stop there on our way from Brimley (Sault St. Marie) on our way to the Porupine Mountains so we don't have to drive as far.
There is a very large modern camping area, plus a completely different rustic area for those of us who like to tent camp (yet still might want to sneak over to get a nice warm shower, or blow dry your hair!)
The beach is what is really wonderful. It is a very gradual drop, great for small children, with swings and a brand new play jungle area (2016.) The water in Lake Michigama is tea colored, which makes it interesting and I think it might even contribute to how warm it is (this is August mind you.)
They also have a good camp host program the past few years with things for the kids to do.
All facilities were clean and in very good repair - way to use those Passport dollars!
Remember, in Michigan our parks are not funded by tax dollars, but by park fees, and our Michigan Passport license option, so be sure to opt in and support the parks.response / report this review -
