Love it!! Beautiful complex and pool. Like the fact that it's gated and feel safe there. Great location ad well. Bailey was a great guide.

I love having my own house so I don’t have to worry as much about noise. It’s a little far from campus and some of the fines are a little excessive. Megan at the clubhouse was very helpful

Lived here for 4 years that I have been at school down here. I have had all good experiences and do not have anything bad to say. Definitely recommend checking it out. A few small complaints would be theres not enough room for trash on main section, and then also the pool table could be kept up better. But other than that I really enjoyed living here.

I've lived at the Cottages for 2 years and I'm living here again next year. This place is amazing!!! The pool is amazing, the lake is amazing, and you have amazing staff members like Megan! I highly recommend signing a lease here!

I really loved living at The Cottages. I lived there for 3 years and loved every minute of it. The staff was awesome and the clubhouse was always open. I got to meet some really great people there that are now my life long friends. The staff always put on great events and I really hated when I had to miss one. I recommend everyone should live here. Once you move-in, you won't want to move.

I am a former resident of The Cottages, although I just moved out this past July. I lived at The Cottages my sophomore through senior years of college and my experience was nothing short of exceptional. I would recommend this place 100% to anyone looking to move off campus in Tuscaloosa. The staff was always friendly, maintenance was consistently prompt and getting fed by The Retreat was no a rare occasion (Can I get an AMEN). In addition the amenities are extremely convenient and useful from the perspective of a busy college student. I followed all my move out instructions and received a final account statement that I deemed as appropriate. There is no place in Tuscaloosa like the cottages. Living here will enhance your college experience in ways you can't image.

If you are interested in living at The Retreat (The Cottages), you might as well buy a lottery ticket as well to fund your overages. Each month, you get charged an insane amount for utilities that were never justified, and if you think that is bad, just wait until you get your move out fee. I got charged $300 when I moved out and it took well over a month to get a single answer about where the charges were from. Some of the ridiculous charges I got were replacing a missing light bulb, removing the lint out of the dryer, and paying for the damages created by a random person they put into my house during the summer… without even telling me that he was moving in. I contacted the manager of The Retreat and she told me I was “Nit picking” and to not contact her via email again. I then contacted the CEO and the Portfolio Manager of Cardinal Groups and after 2 weeks, Anthony (the Portfolio Manager) called me and said he will see what he can do to justify the charges. I never got a call back from Anthony and he decided he would rather make the manager of The Retreat tell me that they’re not going to do anything about the ridiculous charges. Courtney Bagwell, the Assistant Community Manager, loves the words “we will send you to collections.” Also, when you sign, you are promised all these amazing amenities. The golf simulator was out of service the whole year I lived there, the printer was “out of order”, the movie theater never worked, and if you’d like to play pool, make sure you buy your own stick due to none available in playable condition. The only decent perk is the pool, but if you’d like to pay $650 a month plus over $1,000 in overages and unjustified charges, please contact me and I will get you a pool. I don’t understand how this company is still in business. All of the reviews show the truth, and when you see great reviews, just know that they give you free stuff when you leave one that leans to their favor. I’d rather live in prison for a year than deal with these buffoon’s ever again in my life. 0.01 out of 10,000 stars.

The cottages are really nice! The staff is friendly and professional. They are always trying to go above and beyond for their residents; whether it be planning activities or answering questions, they are always there to make sure you have a great experience living here. If you are a parent looking for a place for your college student look no further. You will feel relieved knowing your child is in a gated community with a reliable management team. No where else in Tuscaloosa can compare.

It's an alright place to live. beautiful lake, but that does cause a unusually high amount of insect activity. I have never lived in a place with more spiders (4 brown recluse in the first 3 days I lived here) it's a nice change to live in a house(cottage) instead of a traditional apartment. For what you're paying it's a fair situation someone could be content with.

Absolutely love the new clubhouse renovations and the Camp Cottages theme! Very thankful for a property and staff that really try to give their residents the best experience possible. I'm a nursing major and getting a room at the library is a struggle, but getting a room for my study group in the newly renovated study area has been a breeze! Green spaces 10/10, lake 10/10, and helpful/friendly staff and management 11/10! Definitely recommend The Cottages to anyone who wants to get the relaxing disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city and campus, while still being a straight shot to all the action!

Talk to anyone that lives here and you will get an idea of how management treats maintenance requests and its residents. You will see a few reviews about how fast they are to respond, but this is only when small things break. Most houses have at least one major issue throughout the year since they are so cheaply built (we had a burst pipe and a shattered glass door) and these issues take forever to resolve. I attached pictures from my bathroom where I had a hole leading outside for 2 weeks. The contractors arrived when no one was home with no warning from the Retreat. They tore out drywall near the leak and didn't cover anything in the bedroom or bathroom so everything was covered in dust (computer, bed, toothbrush, tv, etc). At one point they didn't show up for 2 days and when I went to the main office I was told that the contractors reported that the work was done. They didn't believe me so I had to have someone from the office come look and see for themselves. "Oh wow that's crazy," was their reaction. We have been waiting for our glass door to be fixed for almost 3 weeks now as well. The landscapers cracked the pane and we reported it the same day. Four days later glass was falling out each time the door was opened so we removed the broken pieces and duct taped the edges. The next day the duct tape was removed and more broken glass was on the porch. The main office told us they had tried to fix it but had the wrong sized pane. I don't expect it to be fixed until after we move out. Additionally, you will receive an overage for utilities every month. I don't know a single person living here who doesn't. Dealing with management is also hard because they hide behind the college students at the front desk who really aren't given enough responsibility to help you with any of your problems. There's lots of better housing closer to campus, don't bother with this place.

I have lived at The Retreat for two years and am looking forward to my third! The community events and pool parties have made for such good memories during my time here. The staff is always helpful, communicative and willing to ensure that your stay is as comfortable as possible. I am definitely looking forward to what the new management brings to the community. Would 10/10 recommend any student looking for off-campus housing to sign a lease here!

I'm so excited to be living there in the Fall! The place is gorgeous, and in a great spot by a beautiful lake! The staff and management have been nothing but helpful with any kind of questions I've had. They are up front with you and are so nice! The houses themselves are so spacious and look so comfortable. Without a doubt, I'm stoked to call this place home in a few months!

The Retreat is overall a pretty good place to live. It's got the highest quality housing and best amenities of anywhere around campus, and it offers competitive pricing and enticing promotions throughout the year, such as wing eating contests and sending free pizzas for doing online reviews. My only complaints about this living community are small and rather specific, and they are only that it has speed bumps at the entrance, strict security guards that will hassle, but ultimately let pass, your friends or guests when they try to drive into your neighborhood on weeknights, and how it's not within walking distance from campus. None of these, however, are anywhere near significant enough to negatively affect the esteem to which I hold this place in my memory moving forward. I've enjoyed my time at The Retreat very much, and would consider it the clear choice for your off campus living arrangements after your freshman year.

I live in a five-bedroom cottage at The Retreat and my roommates and I have had a great experience here overall. Maintenance requests are usually handled in a very timely manner-- once we had a plumbing issue on a Sunday afternoon and someone came to resolve the issue right away. While some of the amenities are a bit over-the-top (golf simulator, tanning, etc.), living at The Retreat has honestly been a pretty cost-effective option (in the five-bed cottage, anyways). And being right by a lake with a nice little walking trail is a wonderful perk! My roommates and I decided to re-sign with The Retreat for next year, as we have been very satisfied with our experience.
