I'm really conflicted on how to review the store.
I have been to the store twice, as of today. The first time I went up to the store (I'm from out of town) the staff was friendly and helpful and the prices were reasonable. I left with a couple of frags and some food that I can't get back home and was completely satisfied with my experience. If I was reviewing the store based on that experience alone I would give the store 5 out of 5 stars hands down.
Today, however, I had a much different experience. I drove an hour and a half to indy for the sole purpose of visiting the store. Today they were having their warehouse sale, selling old goods at extremely cheap prices out of their warehouse. I found a few things I needed and was quite happy with my purchases. The gentlemen in the warehouse were friendly and helpful. I then drove the half block from their warehouse over to their actual store and encountered the exact opposite.
I had been planning on purchasing a frag or two while I was up from out of town, but to my dismay the frags were much more expensive than the last time I had visited, and on top of that many of them looked unhealthy and many were completely unremarkable. At this point I was a little disappointed but not that upset considering I had gotten great deals at their warehouse sale.
I then went up to two of the staff members who were talking to each other and politely asked if the increase in price was due to winter weather making shipping more expensive. The staff member responded as if I had just insulted her mother, seeming to be incredibly offended by the question. She, in an incredibly rude and unprofessional tone commented that the frags they had were only the finest premium frags, and their prices were solely dictated by quality. She then continued on about this in an incredibly condescending manner. During this exchange, the other staff member stood there listening and saying nothing.
I had had enough and left the store without making a purchase, entirely because of her response.
The frags that were available, as previously stated, did not seem to be anything rare, and in many cases were entirely unattractive. The last time I had visited the store I had purchased two beautiful frags at the prices of 15$ and 20$. This time, however, with the exception of five to ten microscopic frags of various ugly leathers that appeared to be on their way out, as well as 2 beautiful ricordea (that I would have loved to buy had i not had this experience), no frags were priced below $30. I can excuse high prices, that doesn't bother me nearly as much. I'd much rather spend more to buy local than from petco. What I cannot excuse was the way I was treated by the staff.
I don't know if I will be back any time soon. It's incredibly disappointing because I had fallen in love with the store the first time I was In, but this experience completely ruined it for me.response / report this review -

Lots of freshwater and saltwater options and the only place in this state that I've found that sells healthy looking Ranchu and PearlScale goldfish! I recently found out that they will take in the shrimp and fish I breed for in store credit, I wish they also would take some of my purple/magenta/pink mystery snails, but I'll take what I can get. Knowledgeable staff, variety, great tank conditions and trade in for in store credit is more than I could have imagined in one store. It's an hour away from me, but yes I drove up there for over 100 dollars worth of reasonably priced Dragon Stone and Goldfish because I couldn't find anyone else who stocked such things. I don't like buying specific fish or stones online that I can't handle and see the health and over all look of myself, so my experience has been great and I'll keep being a customer as long as it's doors are open and I live in this state.

Great fish selection (many hard to aquire species). Great aquariums and supplies. Plenty of tank decorations (both live and fake plants and tons of rocks and wood). Staff is friendly and helpful. Very good prices as well! If you are into the aquarium hobby, you should check this place out. It's worth the drive and beats the big retailers many times over!

Good shop for both fresh and salt water. I was amazed by the variety of dry goods as well. They have a variety of rocks and wood that come in various sizes. Live plants as well as fake. Dry food as well as frozen food. Other aquarium equipment as you need, air line, fish nets, filters, aquascaping tools, ect.

Very good service. The staff knows what fish need and how to get the most time for a fish. Their tanks were well maintained. I highly recommend going here for your fish.

The owner Kevin has been so great. This is one of my husband's favorite stores. They also offer a residential aquarium and pond services. Kyle and Andrew are the best. They always have our aquarium and pond looking top notch. They go above and beyond to please the customer. I would highly recommend The Reef to anyone with saltwater or freshwater fish.

Out of town reefer here. Clean shop, healthy fish. Higher prices than one would see farther from a metropolitan area, and coral not as bright and colorful as I was expecting. Good shop, but not the best.

Very unique store that seems to be the only one of its kind in the Indy area. Had a huge and selection of different fish and aquarium material. Really friendly staff that seemed to know what they were talking about.

I've been 3 times in the past month, each time the person I talk to acts like the person I talked to prior was totally wrong, and contradicts things I have read online. Each purchase suggestion they give me has led to a dead fish or frog. Yesterday our betta was fine, I moved him to a bigger tank (using all the same water changing methods I had before) with the mistake of changing to sand, per the "expert" suggestion and now I have to tell my 7 year old her fish is dead. Just weeks after burying her frog (that was way to big for little tank, and according to yesterday's sales guy on was the wrong type of frog).
If you need any sort of guidance in purchasing or fish care, go elsewhere (though probably fine if you already know what you are doing).response / report this review -

I have been shopping at reef for a while now and i like this place. Good selection and well informed staff. I however do not like staff being changed constantly, it makes it difficult to build rapport. Ex: I notice that i am given low in-store credit by new staff and decent credit by old staff. I usually go in when someone i know is working. Whenever i think of donating my fishes or corals, i think of reef since i know they will be taken care of much better than any other aquarium store in town and will eventually end up at a better homes.

I've been going to the reef on and off ever since I was a toddler with my father. I've seen it under a lot of new management and I've seen it evolve from when I was a kid. Though the store may be a little bit overpriced at times and the constant new faces can be a little much their workers are very educated and they actually care about getting you a good aquarium that will last. This is one of the only good places you can get quality fish and accurate information. They have everything from salt water, cichlids, tropical fish, axolotls and more. They even added a pond section recently. I try to come here at least once every 2 weeks as they're always getting something new, exciting and exotic in! :)
