Best vodka gimlet I ever had. Trendy bar scene. Street parking.

They are going for the cozy speakeasy atmosphere and yet the music was ridiculously loud and the staff was incredibly uptight.. Dim, warm lights, old electric bulbs, and chic upholstery paired with blaring crappy house music an unfortunate contradiction. I had to shout in order to have a conversation with my companion. We sat at the bar. The service was slow, inattentive, and abrupt. There are too many great bars in this city, do not waste your time at this one.

This place is rock solid. So it's a little tricky to find, which made the whole experience even better. We see a bouncer who tells us to head to the back and up the stairs. Only second level is open tonight. We clamber up an old, but tidy, backstair. Soon we're seated at a small with comfy bar. The place is sort of plush and feels like a gastropub. The drinks were awesome and the bartenders were friendly and helpful.

Monday night happy hour upstairs is great. Awesome speakeasy type historic like vibe to the place. Good deals, and good drinks. Very cozy with lots of lounge areas. Perfect for a date.

This place was nice. The environment was awesome and chill. Went in with my wife the other day to celebrate an early anniversary, we were really excited to try this new place.
But we were disappointed by the end of the night.
The bouncer was really nice, but then the problem started when we entered and we were just standing there like idiots. We thought someone was going to seat us because we saw waiters at tables so we thought we should wait, but nothing. We sat down ourselves and then again, waited, and waited. Since we first came in a good 15mins or more have passed until I had to get up and ask one of the bartenders how to order food. He told me I could do from here, so we did. Order some drinks there too, but because it was our first time there i was asking some questions and he seemed ro be annoyed by them. Then after all that, a waiter finally came over and gave us water finally then our food.
We also saw how the table next to us was empty then another couple came and then were served right away.
Great food and drinks, but the service was absolutely terrible. Wouldn't recommended because of how we got ignored.response / report this review -

Low key, dimly-lit cocktail bar with a speakeasy atmosphere. There's a piano and pool table upstairs. There was a small group of flapper girls when I went in one evening and it really played up to the 20's vibe. Loved it!

Very weird bouncer - tried to kick me out after saying goodnight to my Mom and Sister, as I was visiting from out of town. I had one cocktail there in the span of an hour, but the bouncer told me "I've been watching you all night, and you're not the type of person we want in here." So I spend $15 on a cocktail, sit at a bar with a couple mid-30's friends, my mom and sister, and were literally the only ones in there on a Friday night, but I guess I'm not what they want in there. Best of luck Barrelhouse! Guess your bouncer thinks its a better vibe when there are zero people in there.

My fiancee and I stopped in one evening after a friend's birthday party for a quick late night burger, fries and cocktail. The cocktail menu is substantial. If you've ever looked through the Please Don't Tell book, they've pretty much got every drink in there. We opted for a mezcal drink that was very good. We also had a burger, also a very good showing, and the fries were very well seasoned.
We noticed lots of people on dates here so that seems to be the vibe, also lots of groups of friends. Very casual, but you wouldn't feel out of place if you dressed up.response / report this review -

As far as I'm concerned, this is the best bar, as well as my favorite bar in Chicago. I've been coming here since November 2011, and always make sure this my one of my stops whenever I'm out in Lincoln Park. Whenever I have friends in town, I always make sure to bring them here. The staff are amazing, knowledgeable, and friendly. The drinks are delicious and meticulously crafted. I honestly can't say enough positives about this bar, the ownership, or the staff.

Excellent bar staff. Very knowledgeable and passionate in creating numerous cocktails from their volume of recipes/menu. The bartenders are also willing to go "off menu" and play with some creative cocktails based on a few questions of your likes and dislikes. I've sampled from both the regular menu and the bartender choice and I infinitely prefer the bartender choice, mostly because of the enthusiasm displayed by the bartender as they whip-up something special. Food menu is very limited but delicious.

Great drinks served by a staff who really know their stuff. We went upstairs and it was a cozy place. Worth going out of your way for if you're a cocktail fan; they have a huge menu with a lot of variety

Great, inventive, extensive cocktail list. Great selection of liquor too. Service was good; popcorn and tartare were delicious! Quiet on a snowy Monday night!

Cocktail bar with a speakeasy feel. The downstairs features bar seating, high tables, and large leather booths. The room is made of dark wood and features a subtle view of the kitchen.
Make your way to the back to be seated in the more intimate upstairs. If seating is available, follow the hostess up a stairway lit by red satin chandeliers, where you'll be seated in the coolest room in the place. Leather couches and armchairs encircle low tables. A live piano player plays ragtime. A party room features pool.
