One of the best capital buildings I've been to. Amazing history and the tours are free and VERY informative. I had an amazing time being a native texan learning more about Texas history in that building than I ever have in Texas history class in grade school highly recommended place to visit

The building looks so beautiful from the outside! I toured this building in March 2014 and had a fantastic experience! Tourists visiting Austin must come to the Texas State Capitol.

Liked it here very much! We took a tour in February and went there few times within last week. I really like the spirit! And we will come again next time for sure.

Just strolled around the outside, but it is very well-groomed and landscaped with old live oaks and Confederate and Texas monuments dotting the grounds. The building itself is a brilliant reddish brown colour, unique among state capitol buildings. Worth a visit for any reason why you might need to visit the capitol. Cheers.

I’m not a super Texan by any means and in no longer live there but it was still great to visit the capital building. Great architecture to see. Parking was easy to find and going inside was free, which is always a plus. As for the monuments, yes some are being looked in a harsh light, and I don’t agree with them but they are there and yeah I took pictures of them. Anyways it’s a good place to go and also to go to have your voice be heard.

My 2 year old and I had fun exploring the capitol and the grounds. My boy liked the cannons and statute; & posed for photos with each. Our tour guide was very nice and knowledgeable - and patient (again 2 year old). On top of all that - it was free!

I've had the opportunity to walk around a number of state capitols. Their locations are typically in fairly walkable neighborhoods and surrounded by gardens and lawns. The Texas state capitol is such a situation, with extensive grounds, and the governor's mansion nearby. One thing that is different here as compared to other state capitols is the overt presence of armed state troopers at all access points. Understanding the need for security, this regardless gives the impression that members of the public are somewhat less than welcome in this public facility.

Beautiful place and FREE TOURS! Also you can walk around as you please. Some doors are locked at different times so be sure to check in advance. Also you are checked through a metal detector when walking in and it can be a bit crowded during the weekend. All in all, it was a great historical adventure during our trip to Austin. THEY HAVE ELEVATORS if you are elderly or disabled and need assistance so don’t be afraid to explore.

Very impressive building, and free to visit so it's essential when visiting Austin. The rotunda is beautiful. You can walk into the senate chamber and house of representatives, as well as the supreme court. Depending on whether they're in session I suppose, it was Sunday when we visited so nothing was going on. The self-guided tour leaflets were sufficient to give us a good look around the building and the grounds, though we never found the way to the extension.

We came here during Spring Break at my child's request, having recently learned about Texas government in school. Overall, it was a very nice visit. Parking was very easy to find and much cheaper than downtown parking in San Antonio. We waited for a tour but in hindsight we should have just walked around on our own. Our tour guide was a very sweet but very tiny lady. It was difficult to understand/hear her. We also moved too quickly through some areas and lingered too long in others. The building is easy enough to navigate on your own and you can focus on what you're interested in. The gift shop has some cool things but as usual are quite pricey. But the building is really beautiful and my 7 year old really enjoyed the visit.

Everything about the Texas State Capitol is incredible. The grounds are beautiful. Lots of monuments. The building is amazing. I recommend taking the free tour of the building. Our tour guide was great, had lots of facts and a great sense of humor. Words can not truly express how great this Capitol is.

Had a wonderful time! October is a good time of the month to visit Austin! Not to Hot! Inside the Capital is Amazing! Outside you can just sit on the grass and relax! Love downtown so full of Life! Will be going back Soon!

It is really a beautiful place. It is filled with monuments that will give one a great education on the history of Texas. I was filled with great respect for all the people that made this great state a reality. And the architecture of the building itself is a beauty to behold. My mouth was wide open for most of my stay there. Amazing!

Absolutely beautiful. If you have some time to spend, take the guided tour. If not, keep an eye out for the exquisite details through out the building (there's a lot of very subtle Texas pride decor, such as the door hinges, chandeliers, and door knobs), and spend some time in the underground extension and wandering the grounds full of memorials. The dome was not open for visitors at the time, but you may be able to arrange a trip to the top of it. We decided to go last minute and did not look into it. Overall, a great experience.

Great free tour sight in Austin. If you drive come with quarters for metered parking on the street or $ for the parking garages.

If you want to go in the Capitol Building for a tour or to walk around (both free) be prepared to have your things x-ray ed and walking through a metal dictator. The officers are extremely polite.

Beautiful park grounds with fountains, statues, plenty of benches to rest. A nice place to spend the afternoon relaxing. The squirrels were very friendly and unafraid of humans which some of the tourists seemed to enjoy greatly. Located downtown in walking distance of many restaurants and bars.

Very awe inspiring building with a lot of history. Guided tours are conducted every half an hour. Tour guide spoke quite softly so we could not hear him in such a large crowd. Did the tour ourselves. The tour guide brochure walks you through the entire building. Lots of photo ops.

Terrific! Modern updates, but a treasure over 100 years old steeped in tradition. Mahogany, brass, and marble details--beautiful! Very historical. Many monuments to events and groups of Texans during war on the surrounding grounds. Wonderful gift shop. Staff was knowledgeable and friendly.

Great building. Amazing architecture. There is lots of history attached to the building. Has photos paintings and statues of all the great people who have built the great state of Texas. Overall a good experience. Could have been great if the guide was better. Capitol offers free tours starting every 15 mins.

Outstanding tour (thank you Tim!) and lovely dome that is apparently 7 feet higher than the Capitol Building in D.C. Texas always does things bigger than anyone else! Fantastic opportunity to see the Texas House of Representatives in session dueling it out over various bills on the House floor. Great pictorial posters of each year's State Congressmen/women and Senators with baby photos of some of their grandchildrensome of those grandchildren also became state legislators.
