We came here for a company party. We were not let down.

We started in the upstairs lounge where service was decent despite the massive crowd for the Big 10 championship game. It was very busy, fairly crowded, but still a respite from the madhouse that was downtown Indianapolis leading up to the game. Drinks were expensive, but pours were generous - at least for liquor.

We were seated in a private reserved room in the basement, with glass walls looking into the wine cellar. While this doesn't compare fairly with normal table seating, it made for an incredible overall experience. It felt like we had the restaurant to ourselves, between the privacy doors and the exceptional service.

Service was impeccable, exceptionally courteous. Nothing sat unfilled for more than a moment or two. Plates cleared immediately. Drinks served with appropriate haste. Any food issues sorted without a moment's hassle. All this without once feeling like there were intrusions or interruptions - at times done without you even noticing.

Food was astounding - less from a single or signature dish perspective, more from the broad view: everything was excellent. Fair to say that you might find a "more perfect steak," but you'd have to search far and wide to find a more perfect meal in total.

For us, this was an above-and-beyond treat. For small group events in a private room, this was a top-notch experience - one that probably spoils us from ever dining in the main room.

This place is a very old and traditional steak house. I only went the one time and I ordered a dry aged New York strip medium rare. I feel like it came out medium / medium well. It was a little done for my taste and dry. I did like the seasoning and how they grilled it, it was just to well done for the order. That being said I did still eat it instead of sending it back because my friends got their food and I didn't want them to wait on it. We also had the famous shrimp cocktail which is an experience and not for faint of the heart. Service is excellent and the atmosphere was as well. Although they use fake candles which I find kind of tacky.

Went there for 3yr wedding anniversary. Of course we had to start off with the shrimp cocktail, so hot and delicious. Everything that followed was better than the last. The filet just melts in your mouth. Evan was outstanding; friendly, knowledgeable, and super personable. A definite must if you are visiting Indianapolis!

Phenomenal service and amazing food. The atmosphere is fantastic. The shrimp cocktail, the soup, the ever-loving steaks! And the desserts, don't forget them! Just wow! May be the best meal I've ever had.

Excellent service and exceptional food. The Shrimp Cocktail has the special house blend cocktail sauce that is delicious but fire on your nose and sinuses. It clears after a few seconds but is so delicious it's worth the torture. The steak is the absolute best steak I've ever had.

St Elmo's came in on a must stop steakhouse review that was on the Food Network (2017)
and came in No. 7 in the US. The show stated you must get the 28oz Bone-in Porterhouse. Even though the cut is excessive in size, and not cheap, I had to try it. The place was built in the early 1900s and the feeling inside is very cool, relaxing, laid back. The bartender provided outstanding service. I did order that massive steak medium rare. They don't season the steak rather just cook it. I always season my steaks prior to cooking with salt & pepper so naked was different. It was extremely tender and mouth watering delicious. I ate every bite of that steak and can state, it has to be one of, if not the best steak in Indy. I recommend you go if you've never been. If you've been and haven't ordered the 28oz Bone-in Porterhouse, it's time to get it!

Still a great place for a celebration dinner or if you just want good steak. I am not sure it is as good as it used to be. The chopped salad was very good, but the bacon pieces we a bit tough. My steak had good flavor but did not come out as hot as I would have wanted. Westbrook much sour cream on the baked potato, so much that it made it a bit cold. Good service! A fun atmosphere.

People mistake this place by a steak house when it actually is one of the swankiest bars in the United States. The upstairs lounge is no less of one in SF, NYC or London.

The highlight of this bar are the American whiskies. The own several private casks from the best distilleries in the country. The bartender are polite, knowledgeable and non-intrusive.

A must visit.

I had a trip to Indianapolis and everyone told me to visit St. Elmo's. I had heard of this place a while back and was eager to eat a steak there. I was completely disappointed. I ordered the dry age steak and it came over cook and was very rough. I had better steaks at Outback than at St. Elmo's. If I am paying $50+ for a steak it better be amazing and this place left me disappointed. Maybe it was just a bad night for them because a person I dined with also did not like their steak. The shrimp appetizer was something you have to try if you go here, though, It cleans out your sinuses like nothing else.

One of the best steakhouses I have been to (and Chicago has some great ones). The service was flawless. The ambience is classic. The cocktail sauce made me cry (twice). The steak was perfectly cooked and the sides complimented everything nicely. Dessert was solid but nothing mind blowing. I usually drink my bourbon neat or chilled but the St. Elmo's Cola was excellent. I would make a trip to Indianapolis just to eat here again. Tip: Go for the Sunday three course dinner (it's a great deal).

Great steakhouse with the traditional hospitality and experience. Excellent steaks and even better shrimp cocktails. I love the experience, make sure you have an appointment before coming here. I also enjoy the lounge they have upstairs, what a great addition to the steakhouse.
Make sure you talk to the wait staff, their insight to the menu items and interesting stories will leave you with the most memorable experience in Indy.

Great place to eat, especially the history behind the restaurant. The staff was friendly and the service was good. It worth it to try some of the traditional eats and drinks they offer (navy beans, bourbon cherries, etc). As for the steak I had, the ribeye, it was good. I wouldn't say it was the best steak I've had. I might be a little bias since I live in Cincinnati and Jeff Ruby restaurants are famous for their steaks (hands down the best, and not to mention our waiter mentioned Jeff Ruby after hearing we were from Cincinnati). The pricing is what you'd find at your typical upscale restaurant, but the servings were a little bigger in size. Overall I had to give it a 4 star in comparison to other upscale restaurants I've been to. If the steak I ordered was a little better (which it was highly recommended due to the popularity), than I would've given it a 5 star. Overall I think it's a great restaurant to try in the Indianapolis area - especially due to the history of it!
