Partially re-opened (officially or otherwise) as of Xmas day 2017, with dozens of people on the beach. The last ~200 feet of the beach from the roundabout is no longer roped off, including open picnic tables. Further inland piles of trucked-in sand is yet to be spread around. No water at the showers or toilets, which remain closed. Ocean water is a little too murky for snorkeling, but otherwise nice, with a decent drop off so that adults can actually swim.
However it is the only public beach in the island of Marathon Key. It is a very nice beach with beautiful sunsets. Places to throw up a hammock for the day, outdoor showers to rinse after swimming in the ocean. Nice clean beach, safe to swim, plenty wildlife. Good place to party or picnic. All around is a pretty decent place to spend time with friends or family. Or solo.
Will be nice once construction is finished. I was here on December 1st, 2017. Only a small section was open. While we were there a group of people came and they had a wedding all within like 30 minutes. They took pics and popped champagne. Found lots of cool shells and bits of coral here. Also found some wild hermit crabs. Many different sizes. One the size of a dime and one the size of a tennis ball. Definitely worth going to if you're in Marathon.
Sombrero Beach was badly damaged by Hurricane Irma. I visited on December 7th, 2017. Approximately 85% of the beach is currently under repair and inaccessible. At the far end of the beach you will find a small open area. There is a restroom but no other facilities. Looking forward to the restoration and reopening of the full Glory of Sombrero Beach
Best beach in the keys. Hands down. Bring the kids and the whole family. People say there's no beach in the Keys, well there is and Sombrero Beach is the most beautiful and perfect for small kids. Bathrooms, showers, parking, blue water; amazing!
Today was a great family day. The beach is wonderful (the water has a lot of salt) but the sun and wind was perfect. I recommend you to visit the site. This place has a restroom, shower and beautiful plants and animals
Should be best Beach in FL. Hidden gem in the middle of the keys. It has it all. Pets welcome, playground for kids and fossils embedded in the coral. Great game for kids- find the fossils. Look for them in the exposed coral at the end of the beach. One photo will give you a hint.
It was a great beach. Nice sand to walk plenty of bathrooms and showers to clean off at. There were a ton of iguanas there. I think we saw 8 at one time. The only draw back for my kids was they had almost no sea shells.
What an amazing place! Calm and serene.. wonderful sunsets. You can lounge around at the beach, hit the water and relax. There's free parking and restrooms. Very peaceful and not many people come here, so it's amazing!
Beautiful white sandy beach on the Atlantic Ocean, in the heart of Marathon, that includes a kids park, picnic pavilions, volleyball courts, and handicap accessible bathrooms and showers. The beach is well maintained and enjoyed year-round by locals and vacationers alike.
If you are in the Keys over July 4th - Make sure to join the all-day fun, hosted by the Rotary Club, with live music, games, food, and drinks capped off by an amazing after dark firework display that you can view while lounging in the sand!!
Great beach. Excellent parking. Not too crowded. Pet friendly. Clean. Restrooms and showers available
Great beach spot. A lot busier than I remember it.
Nice location to kick back and relax has shaded picnic tables, volleyball, and lots of white sand beaches to spread out on. Along with lots of free public parking, bathrooms and outside showers to wash off all that salt water and sand. Bonus was being able to skip the umbrella and sit under a coconut tree.
I've been going to this beach since I was 19 years old. Now I'm 58..
What a great change. However going back almost 40 years. Hardly anybody showed up back then compared to hundreds of people today that lay down their blanket or towel on the clean sand.
Great bathrooms. Fantastic outdoor showers for body and just feet. Wonderful landscaping and walkways. Sombrero Beach is probably the Best beach in the Florida Keys.. Maybe definitely !!
This is listed as one of the top beaches in the Florida Keys, and they aren't kidding! Located in Marathon, this beach was exactly what we were looking for.
The beach was on the Atlantic, but protected enough that there were no large waves, just gentle lapping against the shore. Not for surfers, but great for snorkeling right from shore, if fact, we saw many fish, barracuda, and an eel just swimming out from the beach. The water was warm, the sand was soft and rock-free. Nearby were palm trees, tidal pools, and a few rocky areas for sitting, walking, or kid climbing.
The nice things about Sombrero were: free beaches and free parking up and down the beach. Spots fill up fast, so don't snooze! Also great features were handicapped accessible bathrooms / changing rooms, showers, covered picnic areas, playground, and volleyball pit.
If you're looking for a beach day in the keys, this is it. Only drawbacks (if you think it's a drawback) were no chair or umbrella rentals, and no food shacks or anything like that. Pack your own lunch and you're good to go!
