Recently the restaurant had changed ownership. Food quality seems to have negatively changed. I used to eat at Sakai fairly often (2 times a month). However, Wife ordered chicken teriyaki and the chicken was inedible, very rubbery. Udon soup it not as flavorful as it has in the past. One improvement is the Sushi, arguably best in town. It remains quite good and there are often new special rolls to try.

Shockingly authentic in how they make the couple items we ordered. The curry was Japanese style curry and the yakisoba was prepped very well. I don't think I've found another place in years that does curry correctly, so that was really nice.

The volcano roll was delicious, definitely built for American tastes. This is consistent with their entire roll selections. The rice was really good.

We've been eating here for several years, under the previous owner and the now current one. There was an adjustment period in the spring of 2017 as many reviews state, but they are now doing a nice job at offering a good quality dining experience. The sushi melts in your mouth and I would say it's the best in the area, at a close second behind the Tensuke market in Columbus. Can't say about the hibachi, but as far as ordering from the normal menu the portions and quality are good. Service was friendly and attentive. Will come back.

Just what I needed. This establishment has it all. The ambiance, the excellent customer service and the delicious cuisine. I tried the spicy tuna roll: fresh and tasty. I also ordered spring rolls which were crispy and hot. Great flavor. I had the noodles which was a new taste for me as the broth was a bit sweet. Suggested by the server and I'm thankful for it. Received a $5 coupon for next visit with my bill. Great birthday lunch and I will be back soon! (Shown is my daughters bento box as well)

The salad, miso soup and sushi were good. The hibachi meal was lackluster. Instead of just cooking the meat portions and providing a variety of sauces, a sauce was added directly. It detracted from the experience.

This is not a place for anyone who is seeking for authentic Japanese food. Used to be a good place, had more Japanese customers, but ownership changed to non-Japanese since April 2017. None of the dishes taste Japanese. The sushi bar staff are not professional at all. Current owner doesn’t care about keeping quality food, and doesn’t have any sense of Japanese food. Too bad to lose a good place. Will never go back!

Used to be a great place, until a few months ago it got new owners. Tried it a few times since then, it's gotten worse and worse. We went at 5pm and we're only 4 people before us. Waited almost 45 minutes for sushi pieces. My party got to go boxes before I even got the sushi. I will not be back anytime soon! The new owner is just about making money, the atmosphere isn't the same, get better service from the sushi bar at Kroger.

Good atmosphere. Decent service attention.
But, Sushi Large and Sushi small only differ in the amount of rice wrapping.
Neoguri was a Rip off, tiny 1 oz of the tuna on top of a load of rice. 3 oz of fish meat bare for $3.95 would be fair price, instead, like that at Harry's in Lexington.
I am not at all happy with their cutting ingredients volume for profits.

This is probably the best Japanese restaurant around. It's run by a Japanese owner, and the Japanese regulars can vouch for the quality.
The place offers great lunch prices; I love the lunch sets and rice bowls. If you're shy about trying something new, I'd recommend the Katsudon or Katsu curry.

The best sushi in Dayton, in my humble opinion. If you appreciate good sushi, then Sakai is for you. Their fish is always fresh, which is difficult for inland Ohio! Another subtle thing, I enjoy is that they continually cook fresh rice for their nigiri pieces and rolls. Therefore the rice is around room temperature or just slightly-chilled, unlike a lot of restaurants that refrigerate their rice which dries it out. It's the little things, that set this place apart. I have yet to try their hibachi, but I'm looking forward to it and may update my review after that!
