My wife and I loved staying at this old, independently owned hotel. All its creaky faults and character are what make this hotel different from your franchise places. I read some of the reviews and expected less. Our room was nice, clean, bed was comfortable, AC and plumbing worked. Walk out on to the communal balcony and watch the sunrise in the morning. Perfection. Honestly, those people who wrote negative reviews about this Hotel should stay at the Marriott over at the interstate. The place is full of old southern charm, with a nice bar and restaurant attached to it. St. Mary's itself is a wonderful little town. Not my first time there and it has not changed a bit. Off the beaten path, connected by ferry to Cumberland Island, history, southern GA hospitality.

The place is run-down and dreary. It is a great location, but it seems to have been abandoned by its owners. I would be less if harsh if the price of a room was more like $45 a night.

Just don't know how quaint, quaint can be. St. Mary's room #14 with the crack in the sink.The formerly broken towel bar in the dresser from another review could be thrown away but I guess it is good in reserve if the new one brakes. Last but not least, the vice grips to control the shower.

The staff was very helpful!!! And the proximity to Cumberland Island is perfect. I recommend going in the cooler months as it is an historic building and the window a/c units are a little loud and not terribly efficient. Request room #1 for the best a/c. 😉

Very old historical hotel in downtown St. Mary's. Across the street from Cumberland Island Ferry. Location is convenient for the ferry, and they will pack a cooler lunch for you if you are visiting the Island. This is my 2nd stay at Riverside and I was in the Ravanel #5 room. Aside from the remodeled bathrooms (shower/tub fixtures are loose in the wall), and fresher looking paint in my room, which had some decent unrepaird dings in the wall, they haven't done much to modernize, or freshen up the hotel. Old furniture adds to the "antique" look and feel of the hotel but everything smells old and dirty. No A.C. in the common areas, which gives a hot stuffy feeling as soon as you walk in. There are a few rugs in the hallways that slip when walking on, making for a trip/fall hazard. The rooms are standard metal key. The blanket, pillow covers, and sheets have stains on them. The mattress feels old and very springy. There is a flt screen TV sitting on top of a 6" tall armoire (no closet in the room) and the remote didn't work properly. There is just old furniture in the room making for more of an old bedroom feel vs a hotel room. No mini fridge. Window unit style AC in a wall mount. Plugged into one of the few power outlets in the room, and the power cord hanings in the floor and is a trip hazard. It does provide sufficient air to cool the room Shutter style shades on the room adequately block sunlight in the morning. Pet friendly hotel as there is a house cat, and guests had their dogs in the restaurant/bar areas.

2nd stay here in past 3 yrs. Has gone downhill. Cracked sink, stained bed coverings, broken towel bar. Remodeled bath but it's all they have done in the rooms. No air in the hallways, so it's hot. Lunch is $9 for the island. Location is fantastic. Ice machine broke so they hauled ice over from the restaurant. Staff nice but not overly friendly.

Vintage hotel. I've been here twice. They have free breakfast included with your stay. You can also have them pack you lunch if you are visiting Cumberland Island. They are located right in front of the ferry dock. On the weekends, the locals have a open market on the dock. Great community. I will come stay here again.

Pros: Everyone was very friendly, the cat is cute, and it's super convenient if (like us) you just need a place to sleep before heading off to Cumberland Island. AC worked fine in our room, and the bathroom was decent sized. It's fine for one night. They also offer to pack a lunch for you to take to the Island for $9 which is convenient

Cons: everything is a bit dated and the beds are very, very uncomfortable. I think the goal was "old southern world charm" but it just comes across as dark and dingy. Restaurant (though convenient) does not have great food.

Next time we'll probably just stay at a cheaper chain hotel up the road and drive into town to catch the ferry, but for one night it was alright

Read "into" the reviews of this hotel, as the problems are recurrent. It it old and charming, however had I paid attention to the "real" reviews, we would have stayed elsewhere. Clean sheets do NOT make up for a hard, lumpy bed that was sinking to the middle and about to collapse. The furniture may be old, but that's no excuse for poor maintenance, which seems to be the theme of the entire hotel. Room door locks are poor at best, don't leave your valuables in your room. If you are looking for old style charm with minimum maintenance and poor customer service, then this is your spot.
