I was really excited to try another offering by renowned restaurateur Jose Andres. Unfortunately, Oyamel just fell a little short. Don't get me wrong, the food was very good, the atmosphere lively and fun, etc. It just wasn't great. For starters, it was loud - unbelievably loud. This isn't necessarily anyone's fault, but it does take away from the experience. The food was very good - between the table, we got about 10 small plates. I would say 2 or 3 stood out as extraordinary. Overall, really quite good, but it tries to be too much and is definitely priced higher than the true value ($63 for a pitcher of good-but-not-great margaritas??). I won't go again, but I WILL go to more Jose Andres restaurants.

    Flavor: Great.
    Portions: Small.
    Service: Terrible.

I would have liked to give this place 4-5 stars, but I gave it one star for bad service.

I heard many good things about this place and really wanted to try it. The flavor was just as good as described and expected. The servers were very nice and professional, but we were constantly being rushed to finish and leave. As soon as we finished a plate, it was immediately taken away and the table wiped where the plate sat. Our chips and salsa were taken away before we finished them. They attempted to take away our drinks before we finished them. The second we finished our plates, they took them away and wiped the table as we sat, and immediately put the check in front of us. We both had the feeling that we are being pushed out to make room for people waiting. I understand that it was a busy night for them and that people were waiting for tables, but this is not a taco stand. This is supposed to be a fine dining establishment for a night out. The whole evening took less than 45 minutes. It definitely ruined the mood for us. I would like to return and have their delicious food again, but how am I supposed to sit down and relax and enjoy the food when I'm being pushed to finish quickly and make room for others?

The food was great! Portions were tiny though (and I normally don't even eat that much). I ordered a shrimp dish and it literally came with five shrimp. The food was good enough for 5 stars, but the price and portion size (basically the value) made it lose a star. This place is good for tourists who want a celebrity chef experience or special occasion, otherwise I don't think it's worth the price.

Had the chicken enchiladas with the green chili sauce and a brisket taco. Really good! Waiter was attentive to the level of water in my glass - would fill it as soon as it ran low. That's a huge plus for me because I hate waiting for the potential opportunity of getting my glass filled. Anyway, the others I was with also enjoyed their selection. Definitely get two or three items from the menu as is tapas style - though it's not explicitly described as such on the menu.

Wasn't too big of a fan of the noise levels here. Very loud restaurant at dinner at least when it was totally full, but overall was a good experience. Would go back for sure.

(* credibility claimer: I have visited several parts of Mexico and visit often;thus, I really do understand authentic Mexican food)

The food was okay. The menu has a wide variety of dishes that uses very authentic Mexican ingredients, however these ingredients were not used well. Tacos were savory, but the tortillas were no good! They quickly broke which means that they sat out the tortillas for too long, or did not properly make them. Quite disappointing . Although the food is okay, the atmosphere is fabulous! Really beautiful on the inside!

Not Mexican Food &Horrible Service - Our waiter walked away twice in the middle of our order. Due to his inattentiveness, the waiter got 3 our of 5 orders wrong! We then asked for a booster seat for a toddler, the waiter came back with a seat that had a broken buckle. Our party tried to enjoy the meal, but after that fiasco, any semblance of a great dining experience was gone. It seriously felt like the waiter was going out of his way to give us a terrible experience. Avoid Oyamel - there are plenty of other great places to eat in the area.

Easily one of Jose Andres best places, maybe even the best. The food is a perfect mix of the familiar (if, like me, you grew up with American Mexican food) and the new. It's small plates, which means coming as a group will allow you to sample more food. The guacamole and salt air margarita's are a must, though if you're a beer fan, their selection of Flying Dog beers is also of note. If you only get one taco, make it the braised local beef tongue. If odd foods isn't your thing, don't worry, it doesn't look or taste like tongue. It was one the most delicious cuts of beef I've every had. if you're more adventurous, the grasshopper taco is worth it just for the joy of telling others about out! And as if the food wasn't enough, our server was a treat - he made sure our food all came out at the correct time, which is a feat considering the number of courses. I've been here twice now, and will continue to stop by whenever I'm in the area.

Oyamel is a star in DC. I lived in DC 3 years ago and took my favorite people here when I wanted to impress them with the DC culinary scene. Just came back to the city and was out with friends and we went to the bar... They also have amazing cocktails! Highly recommended for any occasion - try a tequila flight!

Went for drinks on a Tuesday at 6:30. I should have made reservations. It was so crowded, we couldn't get a seat, and patrons and servers kept running into me. It took me over 20 minutes to get one Margarita. The food looked good but we ran out of time waiting for a table. I'd try again with reservations and be ready to spend a lot of money.

This place is amazing! We had such a great time. The food is delicious and the staff attentive. Hit the happy hour before dinner for half price margaritas (which are the best I've had, ever). The only downsize to the happy hour is that you can't order off the min menu at the bar.

When we sat at our table for dinner we began our culinary journey. Our waiter was spot on and deariced every dish and drink we ordered. He explained the history of tequila and how each type was made and he made spot on suggestions.

    The tacos were my favorite!
