Open City is conveniently located only two minutes away from the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan red line stop and features indoor and outdoor seating options. In keeping with its sister restaurants (The Diner, Tryst, and The Coupe), Open City is an eclectic mix of coffee, drinks, comfort food, pastries and sweets in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. This place has options for everyone and anyone – vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, etc. We came for dinner and had the salmon with red rice and roasted chicken with vegetables. They were excellent and portions sizes were large. We polished off some cheesecake and chocolate oreo cake for dessert. The server and staff members were very friendly, attentive, and polite. This is a good casual spot for a date or if you just want to come and relax with a coffee or drink. Note that they serve their full menu (even breakfast) all day. They sell out of their pastries and baked goods early and frequently, so go early if that’s what you're craving.
A little more expensive than I would have thought. The dining room was also over crowded and seemed almost like a mess hall. Having said that the menu is good and there is an overall traditional and yet modern brunch feel. Good vegan and vegetarian options.
I love the food here. In particular, the Open City burger and their breakfast pizza are fantastic. On a nice day, however, you should be prepared to wait a long time for a table, unless you arrive very early. Also, during peak hours, it's really noisy.
In DC for a week and have eaten breakfast here every morning. Service Is fast and friendly.smiling faces from all of the staff. Food has been perfectly prepared. For dinner I had a burger which was cooked just how I asked. Great beer selection. Will continue with my breakfast tradition here for my last 2 days in DC.
I ordered a humus plate ($8) and a side order of gluten free bread ($3) to share with my husband (who was able to eat the regular pita bread that came with the order). I got one small slice of gluten free bread, hardly enough for the humus. When I asked our waitress about it, she said she would check with the manager and came back to confirm that $3 only bought one slice of bread. I asked if I ordered a sandwich and paid the gluten free surcharge, would I get one or two slices of bread? Never did get a clear answer. Anyhow, I do feel Open City has few gluten free options and is not very hospitable to those of us who have this dietary restriction.
Was here 5 times during conference
First of all, food is really great! But all the rest
Was here 5 times, 2 out of 5 times (40%!) they've charged my credit card wrong amount Now need to dispute the transactions.
And once there were 3 of us there, and the guy got my friend and myself wrong burger (we asked for chicken but got beef). But the food is good, no complains here.
Also I once came and was waiting near the "Wait here to be seated" sign. They ended up sitting several people who came later than me
PS
They don't accept Discover, no big deal, but just in case
Cool place that sells breakfast dishes all day. At my table we ordered sandwiches (club, and a BLT). The table to me left ordered breakfast (french toast, and a pastries). Then to my right they had (salads). Our server Rachel S. was nice and served us to the best of her ability. She was one of few servers on the patio area. The hostess were nice too. This place had good service, good food and nice environment.
Our favorite place to eat whenever we are in the area. The burgers and pizza are delicious as well as their iced chai. We never leave without having a slice of pecan pie and take one to go! Servers are usually attentive. The vibe and energy in the restaurant is great and outdoor seating is great when it's available.
Upscale casual. Amazing food. Friendly service. It's a tad expensive (e.g. there's no free refills on drinks). You get what you pay for and you definitely pay for it here. But as an occasional, hip, casual splurge, it's hard to beat.
Thumbs up: you'll feel like part of the hip, urban "in crowd" while eating amazingly tasty comfort food.
Thumbs down: like J.P. Morgan said: if you have to ask, you can't afford it.
Great food! Had a great gluten free menu, my daughter loved her GF pizza! We all enjoyed our meals! Nice atmosphere! A bit crowed and frenzied, but still comfortable! The wait staff was nice and friendly, but didn't come around very often! Ran out of drinks, napkins or needed something more than once and had to either go get it or flag down any server for help! Overall great place and would recommend!!
Delicious breakfast, I got the California scramble. Mom got the Veggie scramble and sis got the fried chicken and waffles. My daughter got the egg and meat kids meal. Everyone was happy. Didn't have to wait too long, service was fast and they were super kid friendly. There were kids of all ages everywhere and they had sidewalk chalk. Definitely recommend.
I've had breakfast here twice while travelling and always really enjoyed the experience. The food is great and they always seem willing to accommodate requests (for example they gave me spinach as a side instead of hash browns). The lattes are also delicious and come with a pair of animal crackers that are adorable!
Very busy on a Saturday morning, but great, open atmosphere and were seated quickly, even with a party of 6. Awesome burrito!
Great service from Elliot today! He brought us a kids cup with water for my 3 year old without asking. He took great care of us. We come every December when we visit the zoo for my son's birthday and Zoo lights. Has nice brunch options, sides and sharable items. My husband gets at least a couple desserts to go.
Building is handicap accessible with a chair lift that goes downstairs to the rest rooms. There is a changing table which is nice for dealing with little ones. Staff have always been wonderful when we visit. We look forward to our next visit.
Tuesday nights are date nights. Get a bottle if wine with the purchase of a calzone or pizza. An excellent deal. The food is good, but watching our server total f#&k up opening a bottle of wine leads me to wonder why the turnover rate on servers is so high. Desserts are amazing with great atmosphere. We come here once a month or so and never had the same server twice. Food, though, is good. 4 stars.
Pretty standard breakfast menu and the service was good. I was staying at a hotel down the street and did not want to pay $$$$ for breakfast. Found this place and the prices were great. They even had gluten free toast so I got to enjoy toast, eggs, and an oversized hashbrown patty. Great choice and a good value.
We were in DC for few days. We stayed close to this restaurant. We end up going there every day for brunch. They have really good food and nice atmosphere. The reason i give them 4 1/2 stars is for service. We ate there 5 times and only one waiter was outstanding. The rest were ok.
