Visited the museum for the first time since I was in elementary school. It was cool then but now - Wow! There are so many exhibits and some are so big. Wandering through is an adventure in itself.

Great for adults and kids (there were lots there today and they were loving it).

A great place to learn about the many different things that make NYS a great place to livè work and retire. Plan on several hours and return trip, especially if you have children or grandchildren. We've spent many wonderful hour there with our children and are not taking their children.

The New York State Museum is a great, free exhibit on the natural history of New York, and its diverse geography. There are changing exhibits that make it worth re-visiting. There is a special display on the 9/11 tragedy. A carousel is located on the Terrace level. The museum is easily accessible by CDTA bus, and there is a parking lot on the east side, as well as a nearby parking garage at Madison and Eagle Street that is open to the public for free on weekends.

There are a million cool things to see here. A little bit of art, a little bit of Natural History. A little bit of local history, a section on the Holocaust, a section on 911, and amazing display of Native American longhouses and arts. One of my favorite parts is the collection of mineral specimens. You can easily spend 5 or 6 hours here if you want to look at everything. If you're only going to come for a day make sure you don't miss seeing the Mastodon skeleton. My main complaint though is that they close the museum shop well before 5. We saw them kick out a kid who came in at 4:50 wanting to look around at some of the souvenirs. He cried. This broke my heart and I don't understand why they couldn't just stay open for a few minutes for the family that wanted to look around. Overall I highly recommend.

Free or not, this exhibit is worth the visit. There is so much to sample, like all of the rare rocks and stones of the New York area, preserved animals displayed in their habitat, and documentation on the development of New York City. On the top floor there is a functioning carousel over 100 years old for all ages to enjoy. Hours are easily spent here and exhibits are engaging. Highly recommend.

Nice place to spend a day. Plenty to see. Check out the carousel upstairs. There's no real plan to eat though. And the entrance is free! Except for special events.

I love museums, but coming from NYC I was thinking I would be discounted. Luckily that was not the case. This is a great showcase off the entire state. There is natural history, science, art, and regular history. There are several different floors and the exhibits are spacious. My favorite part was the carousel.

A really great museum sharing the culture and history of new York City and the state as a whole. The exhibits are built to engage both young and old making it great for any age, and the 1914 carousel with handcrafted horses from the 1800's is a must ride. Top it all off with the incredible architecture of not just the museum but the entire government plaza and you can easily make a day of it or come over and over. Amazingly its also all entirely free. I applaud the state.

I love this museum! I hadn't gone since the days of elementary school field trips until recently, and I still was mesmerized by several of the exhibits. The attention to detail in the animal displays is astounding!!! Beautiful work. The 9/11 exhibit is very moving, as is the Holocaust one. My favorite part is definitely the minerals of New York exhibit. Such incredibly beautiful minerals! I highly recommend stopping in here. Admission is technically free, but you should donate!

Good area and space for small children; really quiet on the day I went. There's not a ton of everything, but there's definitely a variety of topics covered. Also an extensive section on 9/11 so just a warning on those who are sensitive. The facility is relatively clean but its age is noticible. Coupled with the cheap (and sometimes free, check on the website) parking, this donation-only museum is a nice addition to Albany.
