This museum is huge! It was a lot of walking but so many beautiful paintings from different eras. Going here was such a wonderful birthday present. I would love to go back since certain exhibits were closed off. So I hope once things get better I can return and see everything. The gift shop was very nice also. All of the workers seem so helpful.
This place is amazing!!! I really enjoyed the portraits and information of the Presidents and First Ladies. Michelle Obama’s portrait really stands out!! It does take a good while to go through the museum, so it’s probably best to take a couple of trips to truly take in everything.
The delicately displayed work of the Impressionists is certainly moving. Particularly, Monet's Woman with a Parasol evokes faded memories of lost childhood which may be hard to access without such a medium. That said, the best work of art in America is Brady's spiral, brother. Go Pats.
This and the National Portrait Gallery are among my favorite art museums worldwide. Carefully laid out and deliciously intimate. Worth many visits to both the East and West wings.
Hopefully they will open the whole Gallery soon!
I've been to quite a few world class art museums in the past 12 months and this museum compares favorably to most. It's not as cluttered as other galleries and I like that fact. Plus, they have a Vermeer exhibition right now that is amazing. You can't beat the price of admission!
The museum is phenomenal. Amazing, well presented collection. People who work at the museum are super knowledgeable and are very helpful with questions. However the design of the building map is the worst.
I was lost on the ground floor, trying to find Renaissance section, when Forrest, the gentleman who works on the ground floor of the main building, gave me the map annotated with his notes and highlights. Whoever is responsible for that map design should include his notes there, as they were hugely helpful to navigate the galleries. I spent 5 hours in the museum and it was the best experience ever. Without annotations on the map, it wouldn't be the same.
Absolutely phenomenal! I'm not a huge art fan though I am fond of museums. Everything about this place is lovely. The architecture is astounding. The rooms are large ans easily accessible. There is so much to see and take in. We spent two hours in the museum and only saw a fourth of the second floor. Would definitely love to visit again and definitely worth a stop if you're in DC
The national gallery of art is amazing. The architecture and materials even looking from the outside is awe inspiring. When you go inside it only gets better as countless classic and famous paintings are awaiting to be seen. Plan to come here several times a couple hours each time as there is so much to see.
4 stars and not 5 just because you cannot take these beautiful pieces home. 6 stars because you can see this exhibition for free!
I recommend this place to everyone. No excuses that you cannot afford it. Go & see!
This is for more.than one visit. You can get an audio tour as well as staff guided or your own tour.
This place was amazing and a DO NOT MISS! The fact that you can get close up to paintings that date to the origins of our country is amazing. The presidential portraits area is also fantastic. It is eye opening to see that each president faced great struggles at the time but as a country we can persevere and grow. Excited to come back again!
A clean, well-lit and accessible (no admission fee!) world-class museum reposited with thousands of priceless arts treasures arranged chronologically (medieval Europe, Italian Renaissance, Dutch Baroque, French Impressionism, British and American Romanticism and Realism, etc. in the West building and post-Impressionist, Cubism, Expressionism, abstract in the East building) with plenty of amenities including a bookstore, a chic garden cafe on the ground level and huge cafeteria in the concourse level below. It's one of my favorite attractions around DC!
A spectacular, comprehensive collection. The breadth of European and American paintings is marvelous. Name someone, they're in there. I loved the sculpture exhibits as well.
And free? God bless the Smithsonian.
One of the great museums in the world! The Raphael room alone would ensure that, but there are masterpieces in every section of the museum. Also check out the gallery talks by the excellent education and research staffs, as well as lectures by visiting scholars. Even the building is wonderful, from the Pantheon-like entrance with the Giovanni da Bologna Mercury fountain to the cafeteria and the museum store. I visit as often as I can.
Went there on a summer weekday with my wife for our anniversary. It was surprisingly uncrowded, yet the gallery still offers priceless collections from well-known artists, such as Monet, Rembrandt, and many others. I love how it's organized by time period and region making it very easy to prioritize exhibits you most want to see. We fit in a lot in the 2 hours we spent and felt very satisfied!
Another great Smithsonian museum! The architecture of the museum is a piece of art in and of itself. I love the nights on the edge events too.
I spend a whole afternoon at this museum and it's definitely worth it. It has fatastic drawings and the museum is huge. They had west buildings and east building. It's better for you to rent a audio guide to understand the artists' point of view in the drawings. You just enter the code under the drawing and then the audio guide will show the picture which is above the code that you just enter. The had a special code for kids and the audio will be easier and funnier. You can change the audio guide if you go from a building to another. Every building has the audio but you must return to where you rent it. Oh I forgot the most important part, the audio guide is FREE. The museum requires cafeteria but the food were really expensive. The gift shop is amazing to. They have magic cards and books and pencils and other fun staff.
Some of the finest art mankind has ever created on display in magnificent surroundings. And it's free. The section displaying brilliant art by American artists (who I'd never heard of) was a wonderful surprise. I spent 3 hours in the gallery, and it flew by, and I still hadn't seen everything. Of all the museums and galleries on the mall, I rank the NGA highest, and that's high praise indeed.
One of the best museums in Washington, and quite possibly the world, I made this an essential part of my trip to the US capital. It's really too big to see everything in a day, so I had to choose the parts I wanted to see the most, which included the impressionists, the Dutch masters and the Van Gogh collections. I was expecting a lot and I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. It is a place that must be visited on a trip to Washington, and best of all, it's completely free!
An interesting place to go see in DC if you're visiting. Has plenty to see and provides a great learning experience if you're interested. Not really as calm and quiet as I'd expect for an art gallery but aside from that it's a nice place to see. If you enjoy history or are into art then this is a nice place to check out.
