I had an emergency! I was able to be seen right away. Everyone was very accommodating. And there was no shaming for not seeing a dentist for so long.

I am fearful about going to the dentist due to bad experiences as a youngster. Dr. Mertz and staff always take such time and care to make sure I’m comfortable. That’s in addition to top notch dental care. The entire staff is so helpful and friendly. They take so much worry away.

I was so nervous to have the chip fixed in my front tooth because "it's my front tooth"! Dr. Mertz made me feel comfortable and did an amazing job. I am so happy with how it turned out. The color is perfect and he was able to do it without getting me numb.

Mertz claims to be a “Delta Dental Premier dentist” and wears it like a badge.“Delta Dental Premier dentists agree to abide by Delta Dental’s determination of fees. When you visit a Delta Dental Premier dentist, we ensure that you pay no more than the co-insurance percentage specified by your coverage.” This is according to the Delta Dental Insurance website. This statement is clear enough, however, it does allow for the dental office to use underhanded tactics to supplement their income. Things like bait and switch or failing to provide detailed information or options to the patient. In my case, I had an initial cleaning/consultation with a follow-up visit for several old filling repairs. When returning for the follow-up visit, the staff was again very kind and professional, however, they either withheld pertinent information or were completely ignorant of basic insurance coverage. For example, anyone who has had both front and rear fillings knows that the more expensive white fillings are used in the front where they can be visible to others and the less expensive silver fillings are used in the back where they will not be seen. This is dental insurance coverage 101. White fillings receive higher coverage in the front where fillings need to be more aesthetically pleasing and far less coverage in the back where they are less necessary. The Mertz office failed in this regard whether purposefully or ignorantly. When having services performed at the Mertz office, they kindly provide you with a printout showing how much your insurance will cover and your financial responsibility as a patient. They perform their services and take the patient payment as shown on your printout at time of service. This is a great way to operate a medical practice, in theory. In my case, I ended up receiving an additional bill 2 months after service stating that I had an additional patient responsibility of approximately $200.
This was very surprising since everything seemed so cut and dry. I called the number on the bill to find out what was going on and instead of reaching the office I was connected with one of the staff members on their cellular phone and they seemed very surprised by my call. I briefly explained the situation and she informed me that she would look into it the following business day when she returned to work and get back to me.
During the follow up call the next day, I was told that Delta refused coverage on some of the fillings and that I was responsible for the balance. This was very confusing since they gave me a detailed printout of my expected financial responsibility and collected payment at time of service. I asked why and was informed that the coverage was rejected due to the type of fillings used on some of my rear teeth. I explained that the Mertz staff told me that my financial responsibility ended the same day of service when I paid my bill since everything had been pre approved with delta. She said that was only an estimate and the insurance makes the decision based on their agreement with me. At this point I was admittedly irritated. I was previously told that they were a premier provider, everything was cut and dry, they work with delta all time, and I had nothing to worry about. This was obviously not the case. I told them that different filling options were not offered, and after a few minutes of arguing the conversation ended with the staff member saying they would consult with the DR.
I let it go and contacted my personal representative and made them privy to the situation. A few hours later I received a call from my representative. I was informed that this ordeal was entirely due to the white vs silver filling material being used. I disclosed to them that I was never offered any filling options and was shown my patient financial responsibility both before and after service and neither of these showed an additional payment. My representative told me that they were informed by the Mertz office that they don’t offer silver fillings and only white fillings are available.
