It was the sixties and the summer. It was hot and I got a negative threatening and intimidating look when I told the executive officer I would be leaving McConnell Air Force Base even though my orders said "Permanent Change of Station. Now would I be telling this story if I was wrong? Five days after I arrived I received orders to return to George AFB in California PCS. Booyah! Oh yeah in a hot new ride. A 1966 Mercury S55, 428 cubic in., 4 speed convertible with bucket seats and air conditioning. This was the era of the machine. Manual pay records were being changed and IBM was the agent of that change. Stationed in the desert with little to do, I learned both manual and electronic processing of payroll. I became the liaison between data systems and payroll. Forced to leave George Air Force base with orders to McConnell Air Force Base left a vacuum for a job I created. Few people you will meet in life recognized my value and stood up and demanded my return to George. Thank you Mrs. Lena Russell!

Stationed there from 69-72, TAC & SAC back then. Took my new bride to Kansas. Spent my whole enlistment at MCCONNEL AFB. Good memories from a long time ago.

The staff here was very friendly and welcoming on an open house day. We were able to get inside of the 1956 Statotanker that is on static display and a history lesson as well.
