This southern cafeteria is straight out a northerner's dream of what the south must be like. The food is great, but it's really about the classic ambiance. I had fried chicken, collard greens and banana pudding and I was not disappointed.
I'd give it 5 stars, but it's not meant to be that kind of place. It is straight out of Mayberrythe kind of comfort food your grandma cooked back in the day (if you're from the south, anyway). From that perspective, it's delicious.
5 stars for the old school ambiance and 3 stars for not having any grilled chicken/fish options for my new school diet with a preference for very little grains, starches and gluten. I settled for the beef and gravy with green beansvery good, although a tad to much sodium for my taste buds.
Cafeteria style food. Everything was absolutely delicious. Nice small town vibe in the area. Loved it
The food was awesome an we met the owner an the meal was free but the quality of this restaurant makes it even better without having to pay for the first meal is great but we will be back because it was the best
When you want laget home cooking, come here. On the weekend get there around 12-1 because there is a line out the door for people waiting to eat! So worth the wait too. The setup is really nice. Hint Matthews "cafeteria". It is set up exactly like a cafeteria you stand in line you pick up a tray fill your food up and then pay for it at the end.
Just walked out of this restaurant for lunch and I am tellin youif you want the perfect home cooked meal away from home?! This is the place! Friendly people a nice place that the community enjoys meeting up with friends and family to enjoy great food and good company. Priced just right and you will walk out with a to go box or so stuffed it is hard to walk. Please go and enjoy!!!
Matthews is about as good as a meat and three gets, and I write that as a fan of such cuisine. In my view, Matthews has been success for 70something years simply because they season food well in its preparation. Over the years, I've adjusted to 21st century pricing that rarely gets me out for less than $10/head. My only suggestion is that maybe now that it looks like y'all may make it, you might want to go ahead and drop a few $s into replacing some of the WWI surplus metal chairs. Breakfast is a treat as well. Nothing fancy, but a pretty good 5am nosh. FYI---written several of these now of establishments haunted for nearly 2 decades. No 5 stars yet. The logic being that once 5 stars is give, then what? so Matthews = 4+ STARS
Best home cooking around, beside my Grandmother's. The chicken is perfectly fried. The mashed potatoes were creamy and just right. You could definitely tell they were homemade. I wonder how many pounds of potatoes they have to peel in one day? And the strawberry shortcake oh my! I can't say enough good things about this place. The staff was friendly & helpful. The food great. Overall wonderful dining experience. Highly recommended.
Great place to eat for some home cooking, a little pricey
Great food! Great price! Great service. Their food tasted like the country food I have grown up to love.
Horrible! Quality of the food and the obvious language barrier! This place MUST have changed owners! Worst dining experience I've ever Wasted money on! The food was VERY disappointing for the price paid! Never will I return even if it was FREE! 😝
Whats the hype about? Food is ok. I do appreciate a local down home vibe and small business support. I recommend a visit or 2. I have tried it again and still the same.
Iconic restaurant in Tucker. I have been visiting since the early 80s. Great menu choices. Southern style food
