This was an awesome native gem mining we have been to. Judie and Rhonda were very friendly and accommodating. The grounds is kept liberally nicely and the bathrooms extremely clear . There's so much freedom here. For the price, it's a great deal. You can dig your own from various dirt piles and unlimited buckets. They mainly focused on finding sapphire but This area has many different quarts and garner and other interesting rocks which they didn't seem as knowledge of but encouraged us to take home what ever we'd like. Caution wear some old worn clothes. The dirt is red clay and gets very messy! Will definatelt visit again!

I went to mason ruby mine looking for Gems, as soon as you pull up it's a dead end with the makeshift sign saying Mason's Ruby mine "no more visitors after 2 o'clock"which was very strange because online it says they close at 7 PM. I looked on my phone and there was no service I have Verizon, I go to look at my car GPS and it says the nearest thing around are three cemeteries NOTHING else.I rather you get a map to find your way out because there is no signal. Let me get to the creepy part so the lady was like you can get a bucket of dirt for 50$ but I don't guarantee you you're going to find anything an it was 1:52PM remind you the sign said no more visitors after 2PM! So I told The lady I will be right back and I got my car and I Left before 2 o'clock appeared As soon as I pull off I hear gunshots ranging my heart started pumping so I started speeding up to get out of there,as soon as I turn the curb of the side of the mountain you see these two hillbillies standing there with guns I was so nervous I didn't know what to do so I just kept driving to past through I looked at one of their faces and he had the nastiest rotten brown teeth that I ever seen in my life it looked liked he eats humans(The lady teeth also looked like this too but they were more yellowed) I was so scared I thought I was in a movie called wrong turn or Hills have eyes! As soon as I was about to take the turn there was an big white truck with no headlights with a big crate that look like something you would Throw roadKill into! At this point I didnt know what to think I just want to get off the mountain as soon as I could. I just know we didn't belong there. So I made my way through after this situation I got off the mountain to civilization and I asked the lady if she knew about the Masons Ruby mine and she said that she never heard of it all her life she's been living around the area but she knows of another one that was more down the mountain call Hidenight mine. * I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone they are unprofessional and they have makeshift stuff.

Wife and I headed to Franklin for our anniversary, fully planning on hitting several of the mining sites during our two-day stay. We started off at Mason's on day one and loved it so much that we spent all of day two (9:30am to 5:00pm) here. Day one was alot of fun, despite only finding 3 small stones between us, but day two was totally better because we knew what to look for and we also rented one of the hand-trolleys--best $5 spent the whole trip. We moved quadruple the dirt we did the first day and both came away with 18-20 carats total of lovely sparklies.
We had by far the biggest haul on day 2, and some of the other customers seemed disappointed, asking us where we were digging in whispers as if we had some secret knowledge. Nobody is coming away from this a millionaire, lol. This place is worth the trip and the $$ for the experience alone; I can assure you that you are not going to get rich here, and really, you're silly for expecting it. Get your hands dirty, dig up some treasure, and enjoy the experience for what it is.response / report this review -

If you're looking to go mining, then look no further! Mason's Mine is amazing! It's true mining! You get to go up and dig up your own dirt and then bring it down to the sluices. You get to pan your very own sapphires (and rubies if you're lucky!)! If it's your first time or even if you're not sure what you're doing, the staff is extremely knowledgeable and are able to help you every step of the way. They were all very personable and all around good people to spend the day with. You always hear about "southern hospitality" and this place is no exception. From the moment we walked in I felt like I had known them for years and we were best friends seeing each other again. They even have set up a special VIP dig site for special needs and wheelchair restricted individuals. If I could give them 10 stars, I would. Al, Judie, Rhonda, and Bubba, you all were wonderful! Thank you so much for an amazing and unforgettable vacation! I will be back every chance I can get!

I was there the last week of April. They offer a salted pile for entertaining the kids, but the original mine is not salted. I like non-salted mines. It is safe because the original mine is mined by backhoe & placed into piles for you to safely shovel from. The staff was very helpful in assisting me looking for sapphires. I found five small ones- enough to say I had accomplished my goal but not stones worthy of cutting. I also collected other stones that were not corundum; these non-sapphires are for cutting cabochons back home.

We visited mid-July of 2016 and had an awesome time. The staff was very friendly and were ready and willing to help us with all of our questions. Great instruction on how to spot sapphires. Our 3 kids (age range 7-15) had so much fun and are looking forward to going there again on our next family trip! Wear clothes and shoes you won't mind getting wet and dirty!

While on vacation, we (myself, husband, 4 children ages 21, 19, 17, 15) took a detour to go to this mine (on our way to Myrtle Beach). First thing to know before you go:
1. To increase your odds of finding a big sapphire, go early and plan on spending the entire day. We were mislead and thought you could only get a bucket, but actually, you can dig and go through as much dirt as you want.
2. Low quality sapphires are the only gems that truly come from this mine. We paid $30 per person to walk to the dirt piles to get our buckets full. This is mining for your own saphhires.
3. The staff was not helpful, though my family did love Charlie (little Yoda). He was there favorite part of the experience and he was the only staff member that was helpful.
4. Don't bother and waste your time looking for small sapphires. Look for the bug ones. I did find a 29.55 K sapphire, but not sure what I'm going to do with it. Not worth much because low quality.
5. Verizon doesn't have coverage out there so we couldn't use Google maps to find our way out. Print or write directions before you go.response / report this review
