Ribs were undercooked and unseasoned underneath the ho-hum sauce. Service was good but this is not where you go for good Q in San Diego. Even Chile's has better ribs. KC BBQ trades solely on it's Top Gun fame. Head for Phil's instead.

Full of great memorabilia from Top Gun as well as our military. The food was pretty good and the service was good. Worth checking out.

Very good food, reasonably priced. Nice selection of sides. Onion rings we're a bit mushy but still good. Ribs, brisket, and pulled pork were very enjoyable.

I found this place by chance many years ago while traveling from Kansas City to San Diego for a convention. It was only after I walked up to it did I realize the connection to “Top Gun”.

Being a longtime fan of Kansas City style BBQ, I had a certain level of expectation. While the food was decent quality and good flavor, if stood up to real Kansas City BBQ it probably wouldn’t win any awards.

That said, I’ve visited many times over the years, and the décor seems to be growing more and more on the “Top Gun” tie in, and less and less on the Kansas City theme. That said, the place always does seem to be crowded, but the food comes from the kitchen at a decent place.

I've heard about this place for years and finally got a chance to go now that I live a mile or less away. Definitely a quaint lil place, it has character.

I ordereduhhhwell it was BBQ brisket (a bit on the dry side) and a BBQ 1/4 🐔 (I've seen quails that were bigger and meatier and retained some of their moisture), 🥔 salad (very good), baked beans (tasty) given a sample of the slaw (delish) and a Hard Root Beer (awesome).

I think there was only one server for the joint as it wasn't really busy but definitely her focus/attention was elsewhere but she was sweet. The bill winded up being I believe $24 something and normally I wouldn't mind if it were worth it as I'm not cheap, but the portions were very small (think kids menu). The sides were like 2oz cups if that and the dry chicken meat that not even the delicious sauce could save was really a huge let down.

The place is clearly resting on its Top Gun fame. The BBQ was average and the sides were pretty mediocre. As stated in the other reviews, the service could definitely improve.

This place is a joke. It's literally riding on the fact that Top Gun filmed here. There are 4 pictures dedicated to KC and a ton to Tom Cruise. The service was horrible. Our server was rude and took forever to come to our table every time. She huffed and puffed every time we asked for things, but never was like is there anything else I can get you? And the food was the worst part. It was completely bland- and they had once sauce. They also randomly ran out of burnt ends which is fine if it wasn't literally called Kansas City BBQ. The mac and cheese tasted like it came out of a box. As someone who is from Kansas City, it is an insult to name the restaurant that. It doesn't compare to real KC BBQ.

Started off by having a beautiful hostess and server; they had very good manners and were polite. I had the HOMEMADE CHILI it was amazing. Wife had the combo brisket and spare ribs, they said it was amazing. 5 stars amazing food and service thank you.

This place is pretty foul. Even if the food had been great, which it was not, and the service had been good, which it was not, the bathrooms alone would earn this place a 1 star. My female work colleague tried to use the ladies room but it was backed up and not being attended to so she asked me to watch the men's room door for her (as there was no lock) so she could use it instead. She lasted about 2 seconds and came out gagging. Truly disgusting and I shudder to think what the kitchen looked like, my stomach was a wreck all night. They need to spend less time yammmering on about a scene from a 30 year old movie that was shot there and more time training staff and cleaning bathrooms.

I have to say, the servers were perfectly nice but just utterly disorganized. Our order was completely messed up.

Come for the Top Gun swag, but not the food. West Coast IPA was great, service was great, but the soggy corn on the cob and flat BBQ sauce left room for improvement. Macaroni and cheese side dish was better than the "all white chicken" sandwich platter I had (see BBQ sauce comment above). If your a fan of Top Gun, this place is heaven. Talk to some staff for a little history on the place and filming, you'll learn a thing or two.

This is the "Top Gun" Bar where part of the movie was filmed. It's on old bar. Somewhat friendly people with decent food. If you want to visit the bar where the movie was filmed, come in and it will be fun. If you want great food and great service, there's plenty of other places around to visit.

Food was good, but just missing something. The food was just a little bit bland and flavor lacking. That being said, the food would probably be outstanding for someone that is not a BBQ snob. Everyone I was with was in love with everything, from the actual place to the food quality. The Top Gun ambiance was neat as well. It was cool to stand in the bar where the movie was shot. All in all, the place was good and I would recommend it to 99.9% of people.

The food here is good, service is pretty good usually. If you sit outside it can be a little slow as far as refills. I went once with my dog and they brought her some brisket, which she loved. They are very friendly and love pushing some of the movie, top gun, was filmed there. Cool place though. If you're in town visiting, definitely a place to try so you can tell your friend you were in the bar where the top gun bar scene was filmed

If you are into random Top Gun ephemera, this place is for you. But if you are looking for good BBQ, I'd skip it. For the price, the food was merely adequate and the portion sizes were smaller than I expected. I got the spare ribs and potato salad. Both were fine, but not great. I'd skip this place and stick with one of San Diego's many sea food restaurants.

We're from Kansas City I was skeptical at first about even coming to the "Kansas City barbecue" restaurant in San Diego. It was great. We ordered all types of meat and sides and they were all good. The atmosphere is also great and a bonus if you love the Top Gun movie. Good service as well.
