Tl;dr Version
The Marion County Humane Society told my sister and I that we were not candidates for adopting a dog because:
1. We both work and being home away for six hours is too long to leave a large dog indoor. (If they think that’s unacceptable, then they probably need to start raiding peoples homes and stealing their dogs.)
2. The particular dog we applied to adopt had to “go to a home with kids”. (My sister cannot have children, so it was so nice of them to pour salt on that wound for her.)
3. And instead of coming to our home for an inspection, they just looked at our home on Google Earth and determined our generic, chain link fence was too low for this dog. (It has never been too low for my brother’s or my mother’s large dogs.)
4. After they told us all this, the girl at the front desk told us we could go back to their kennels and find another dog to try and apply for. (Uhh, no thanks.)
Don’t visit or support this shelter. They would rather their dogs sit in cramped, noisy, wet kennels than go home with capable, knowledgeable, and loving families.

The Long and Detailed Version:
My incredibly mature, disciplined sister bought her first house earlier this year, and over the course of the year she’s been making plans to adopt a dog. She prepared the house for an adult, large dog, and then she picked out a day in December. Today we went to go look at some dogs at the Marion County Humane Society. I should’ve known as soon as I walked in and saw a PETA magazine in the lobby that something wasn’t right. (PETA is the organization who kill approximately 1400 cats and dogs each year.) Anyways, we walked back to the kennels and were looking around. A kennel employee helped us meet two of the dogs, and we were feeling great about the second dog. One of the employees remarked to us that she had been at the shelter for two months, and no one knew why because she was such a sweet, friendly animal. The two gentlemen we dealt with outside were very kind and did their best to inform us about the dogs we checked out, and it was honestly a pleasure dealing with them. Excited and spirits high, we went inside to fill out paperwork. That was when things went rancid.
The staff at the desk were cold and acted like we were bothering them. (Sorry for trying to adopt a dog?) They took my sister’s application back, and returned 30 minutes later. Her application was denied because apparently six hours is too long to leave a dog in a spacious, comfortable house with AC during the weekdays, regardless of whether you’re off during the whole weekend and home by 3 PM every work day. They went on to tell us the dog was too big for our fence, which is interesting because my mother has a Labrador and my brother has a huge bluetick hound, and neither of them have been able to get over the fence. How did they know our fence was too small? They checked it out on Google Earth. (Isn’t technology amazing? Google Earth even measures the height of fences!)
Then, and this is the real good part, they said the particular dog we had applied for MUST go to a home with children. Wow!
Since when is it appropriate, practical, or ETHICAL to require someone to have children in order to provide a dog with a safe, loving home? I could barely believe my ears, and I was so shocked I couldn’t even find my voice to say something. Being that my sister cannot have children, it’s no surprise that she broke down in tears as soon as we started driving away. This was what infuriated me the most about the visit. After all that was said, the girl at the desk told us we could go back to the kennels and pick another dog out and fill out another form. After spending two hours getting to know two dogs, and another 45 minutes sitting in their lobby filling out and waiting on their answer for the paperwork, we were both exhausted and emotionally crushed. This was a terrible first experience for visiting a shelter, and neither of us plan to return or support the Marion County Humane Society. If you don’t work from home and have an 8 foot fence, you’re out of luck, dude!

These people are the WORST shelter I have ever been to! Rude as can be, confrontational and even when you call numerous times to get ahold of a manager they never call back like they say they will. The staff bad mouths people in front of potential owners. They have some real *expletive* for volunteers. The people up front are rude, judgmental and should be investigated by the state. These animals are walking around in their feces the whole time we were there. AVOID THIS PLACE BY ALL MEANS

This is where you find your new family member! All dogs and cats are spayed / nuetered have shots and are ready for new homes. Bring all members of your family to visit. If you are renters, bring letter from landlord stating you can adopt. Prices vary, but are budgetable for most. On occasions you can adopt rabbits and small pets like rats and buddies. Please choose adoption and save a life.

This was our last stop for the day. Walked in and was greeted with happy faces and smiles. The facility was very clean and organized. We were told to go right in to look at the dogs. It was love at first bark.

Wonderful organization and the place is pretty clean considering its a no kill, packed shelter. They are honest about their current adoption options. And the volunteer program working with the pets is Awesome. Fully adore this place and choose to donate here randomly because I was so impressed.

Walked through the kennel, and met a couple great dogs, but they weren't perfect fits. Then I was asked if there had been a dog I wanted to meet. I told them the name of the dog I'd seen online, and the front desk staff said "Oh yeah, he's got a little ear infection, he's in quarantine, but you can meet him." He and I were COMPLETELY meant to be. I was able to put a deposit down and put a hold on him until I got my house ready for his arrival. When I picked him up, everyone was as fantastic as they were the first time I was there. My pup and I are SO happy.

All the animals seem happy and the volunteers were really nice. My boyfriend and I were hoping to adopt a kitten today and we got to meet all the kittens, everyone was nice, there was one lady who was really nice and helpful and we finnaly chose one and went to do the paperwork and that's when the situation turned, the front desk staff were rude and kind of mean. It's no wonder that the shelter is so full because they don't let anyone adopt. We filled out all the information and when she found out that my boyfriends mom was at the house she wanted her to come in and accept the kitten herself. And then when we told her that she couldn't today, she told us that maybe we could "go to the county shelter and save one of those animals."

I was pleasantly surprised how awesome the staff helped my dog. He needed to get "fixed" so when I needed assistance I was directed to a very nice vet. I am still with the same vet..

Maybe your shelter is full because you refuse to adopt dogs out to good homes. The staff in the front is extremely rude and unprofessional. I was interested in a small dog that took to me very quickly in the meet and greet room, and even had several volunteers in the back say that the dog is really not wanting to be around people. 5 minutes into meet and greet the dog was sitting in my lap cuddling with me. Volunteers told me I was a perfect fit for the dog and should have no issues adopting her. That was not the case up front, they denied my application "because I was not a good match."
The facility is dirty and the people running this shelter don't care about their animals or their volunteers. Volunteers running themselves ragged taking care of the dogs and the majority of the dogs are all in outdoor kennels in the heat and humidity of Florida with no way to cool down. Ridiculous and neglectful.
Ladies doing the adoptions are extremely rude and should not be working there. I'm not even sure where most of the money this shelter is getting is going because it's clearly not going to good food and facilities for the animals.
The conditions here should be considered appalling and this place should be shut down. The owner should be charged with Animal abuse and neglect.
Shame on this place for calling itself a humane society, there's nothing humane about this place.

First visit with my kitten was free and they even gave some flea control for kitten strength to my pet with no fee! Super nice people work there and very busy place. Easy to make appointments too!
