Tough place with frequent flight cancellations due to bad weather. The staff didn't have correct information about baggage rules for international flights. We had to leave some suitcases back. And they checked in our carry on bag without us knowing.Very disappointing.
Remember where this airport is, tons of flights get cancelled. This is beyond the airports control. However, everyone is super nice, and for a regional airport, they do an exceptional job!
There isn't a gift shop, coffee bar, or restaurant. 1 gate.
I am going to contact the airport manager tomorrow but on Aug. 11th I was to go on Flight #5001 from CMX to Chicago to Cincinnati to see our daughter and grandchildren. We were supposed to go in May but my husband couldn't go because of medical reasons. So I paid $400 extra to change the flight to August. We got there early and the fog was there. The plane attempted a few times to land but couldn't and went back to Wausau, Wisconsin. This went on with the passengers being told to wait. We had 3 security searches because of promises. In the end we had no flight. The plane did finally come in but the pilots couldn't fly because of high flight hours we were told. So the left the empty plane in front of the viewing window for us to look at. We then decided we have to get in the long lines. Had to book a flight leaving Iron Mountain the next day in the afternoon. Had to drive to Iron Mountainsome had to drive to Green Bay, while others had nowhere to go. See there were no hotels available and no rental carsagents left. The girl behind the counter did not know how to book a flight from Iron Mountain because it was Delta instead of United. It took her almost an hour to book it for us. We were at the airport from 11 a.m until 11 p.m. There is no food there or couchesonly hard chairs. So we went home and drove our own vehicle to Iron Mountain.more expense! Flew to Minneapolis.delayed there. Then flew to Cincinnati and arrived late there. Lost 2 days of my vacation and wound up spending less time with my family. I will be calling them tomorrow and I will never fly United again. I expect some sort of reimbursement for this disaster as other passengers should do too! They knew we couldn't fly out and didn't inform us until it was VERY late. You need to care about your passengers, get more planes, pilots and flight attendants.this airport is the worst in Michigan!
In 2014, CMX was ranked *NUMBER ONE* airport in America for flight delays, with almost a 54% chance of your flight not getting there on time. Not only is it the worse airport in America, but flights there are also unbelievably expensive: I used to routinely spend over $600 on a round trip flight from Detroit. After multiple instances of delayed and missed flights I finally gave up flying into Houghton and opted to drive there instead.
Interestingly, it really doesn't take much longer to drive from Detroit to Houghton than it does to fly in. Leaving Ann Arbor, I have to be out the door by 5AM to catch the 6AM flight into Chicago and then wait there for the Houghton flight with lands at 12:50. Driving, it takes ~8 hours.
I suspect the expensive, infrequent, and unreliable airport service into Hancock is one of the factors holding back the economic development of the region.
Staff is great for the most part, but they could offer more in terms of amenities. Even something like a coffee vending machine would improve things.
After 5 nonconsecutive attempts, I have never been able to actually depart from the Houghton airport. Every single time, the flight has been cancelled. Twice, when the flight was cancelled, I was not allowed a refund for my flight, even though I was entitled one, and once, after the flight was cancelled, all flights for the next 8 days were, as well. In my most recent failure, my flight was cancelled for mechanical problems, and I was not given the option to rebook to a later flight, but the flight leaving later that day departed with no hassles. Houghton airport is the demon that haunts my dreams and I cringe in disgust whenever I am reminded of its wretched existence. I will curse the Houghton airport with my dying breath. In short, it is not a very good airport.
Quaint little airport. Friendly TSA officers which is a first for me one even wished me a happy bday. I moved fairly quickly through the security checkpoint.
