Captain John Garvey is now the owner/operator of the HMS Minnow. My 16 year old son and I have been out with him several times the past couple of years and he runs a safe, efficient and professional boat. With just a few divers, each of our trips has been really special. If you are in Key Largo and want excellent diving while avoiding the crowds, the HMS Minnow is the way to go.
Capt. Jeff runs a nice clean boat that limits the number of divers which is perfect for my crew. Good spearfishing trip.
Lot's to like about Captain Jeff Jarvis and his operation. Small boat so never with a herd, 6 max. He'll take you out with 1-2 divers. He's very knowledgeable of the reefs and gives good briefings. He's got all the equipment you'll need (might be a little older for some people's preferences, 5 years or more). His rates are on par with the other boats and he has a safety first attitude. His communication was great, I emailed him ahead of time, we were worried about the weather and he put us novice divers at ease, explaining that even with the nasty forecast we'd be able to get out, BUT, that he wouldn't take us out if he didn't think the diving would be good. We had some wind, but it was from the west. 8' waves and the diving was still great. Only drawback on the small boat is getting back in with the big swells, you have to hold on tight to his fin ladder as you bounce up and down. After a day with Jeff, we went to Key West and he gave us plenty of recommendations for food and things to see along the way. Then we got blown out from diving Key West so went back to Jeff in Key Largo the next day and had some incredible dives. He also hooked us up with George, a dive guide for like $100/day. This was well worth it, George was great, showed us all the good stuff and we didn't have to worry about anything, including when my buddy had a panic attack on the wreck dive. Can't wait to get back down there and do a back roll to Jeff's saying "get off my boat". He can also get you a good rate at one of the hotels right on the marina, just a short walk from his dock. Did 12 dives with him and was a great experience, the reefs in Pennekamp are in great shape with tons of life.
Captain Jeff Jarvis owns HMS Minnow Charters and our dives with him were great! My wife, son and I dove with Jeff over three days (June 9th-11th, 2009) and each two tank charter was wonderful. Jeff is very knowledgeable about the Key Largo dive sites, not only about what you will see at each site, but also the history of the sites. My wife and son were newly certified and Jeff made them very comfortable. Neither had ever perfomed a backward roll exit and Jeff helped them both with this. The Minnow is the first commercial boat to the dive sites each day and Jeff allows the customers to either pick the dive sites or he decides on the sites based on the input from the customers. Jeff is always ready with Scuba tips or to help with the gear. The price is comparable to the "cattleboat" charters (within $5 to $10 ). Fresh water rinse and cold drinking water were on hand. I will dive with HMS Minnow Charters each time I am in Key Largo.
