Nicely laid out - easy to follow the pattern of the art. Clean. Staff are polite and helpful. Restrooms were clean.
Good mix of eclectic, abstract, classic, oil, sculpture, darker works etc - everyone will find something. They did have a LOT of more abstract work which I’m not fond of but if that’s your thing, you’ll be quite happy. :)

The GCMA is a real godsend for the entire Upstate, particularly its Sundays at 2 program. Where else can you learn about art in a wide variety of ways (including hands on) or enjoy some fine music that complements the fantastic visual art space? Thanks Duke Energy!

Great museum! Hard to believe there is no entrance fee. We went for the Andrew Wyeth exhibit. We visited the Brandywine River Museum years agoPA home of the Wyeth Family. Though we went for the Wyeths, we ended up discovering the amazing talent of South Carolina's own Grainger McKoy. His carvings of birds are beyond incredible!

I enjoyed the art that I saw, but unfortunately did not experience all the museum had to offer because the overbearing guard continuously hounded my boyfriend and I for supposedly violating their rule that patrons must be three feet away from the artwork. Knowing I was being so closely watched made me feel incredibly uncomfortable especially since we didn't do anything wrong. We left after around 10 minutes.

I you want to accosted by guard continuously by hired security than this is your place.
Upon entering we were stopped by security and briefed about how close you can get to a painting.
The closet you can view a work is set at an arms length plus a hand. Approximitely 3 feet.
My first incident of which there were many was becasue I was standing too close. The next because I point ed at something, mind you the work was under glass. The next my favorite, my wife , standing next to me at the 3 foot imagiary peremiter, turned around to face me and the guard walked across the gallery to tell her that her shoulder was too close to the watercolor which again was under glass. Really!
These incident took plase within our first 15 minutes of being there. This continued the entire time we were there. I walked through the gallery with my hands in my pocket, made little difference.
What an uptight museum. I said to a guard once, don't you think this is a little anal, he smiles, completely understood and responded, I am just doing what I was told.
The Andrew Wyeth watercolors presented were mostly second rate. The Jamie Wyeth painting should of been returned to him so he could burn them and the N C Wyeth work would make him turn over in his grave if he knew they were on display.
Don't get me wrong I love the entire families' work. I have been to the Brandy Museum too many times to count. I own just about every publication of there work. So I am making these comments from an informed perspective. I am an educated practicing figurative artist, have been my entire life.
I did enjoy see some of the Wyeths' work as outside of Chads Ford at the Brandywine museum there is non to be viewed but the harassment that went along with being there was not called for.
I will probably not go back again regardless of whatever show is up.
My 2 cents.

Hair spray at Greenville Little Theater was fantastic! Funny and entertaining musical. Cast was very talented. A must see!

The building is an beautiful study of board formed concrete and modern architecture. The exhibits are free and have a cool variety of art. This place would have gotten 5 stars except that the staff was overbearing and discriminatory. We we standing in line behind a older white couple and the lady had a large hand bag. She asked if she needed to leave it. The docent told her that she was fine and it was really reserved for large bulky bags. Less than 30 seconds later he was rudely telling my companion that she needed to leave her small see through mesh bag behind because it had 2 straps and was considered a backpack. He showed up at another part of the exhibit and stood staring at us completely detracting from the artwork. Another docent stopped my companion and told her she needed place her camera strap around her neck. Another group was scolded for standing to close to a window. A trained and efficient security team operates invisibly. This rabble would barely qualify as janitors. They detract from the beautiful experience they are supposed to be preserving

The museum could be so much better. They need to get more traveling exhibits to keep things fresh. The art in this museum doesn't change very often. It's also disappointing that none of the museum staff can explain the art or even the techniques. They have several security guards but no one is available to answer questions. They have a staff of over 20 people who seem to know very little about art but their focus is on businesswhat? They need to be more proactive in helping people understand the art so they can appreciate it. They could also benefit by having something for children. Overall it's a bit stale and needs to evolve.
