Im a big fan of all of the RTJ courses, and this was my first time playing Grand National. The Lakes course was really challenging, but its mind-blowing landscaping and scenery makes it worth every ball I lost. What a treat to be able to play courses like these in Alabama!

Incredible golf experience. The entire staff treats you like a tour pro. There is something special about any of the RTJ Trail sites, that you take with you when you leave. You can't wait to get back there. You'll be talking about your next trip on the way home.

Great public course. Have played both 18 holes and they're very enjoyable. Course seems to always be in great shape. The lodge area is great for an after round drink and lunch.

I kind of wanted to keep this review to myself because there weren't a lot of people here when I visited and that added to the experience. But I've realized that was kind of selfish, and golf resorts need business to stay in business, so here goes.

My wife and I had a super fun time during our visit June 27-July 1, 2017. Stayed in the Marriott Grand National, just a short drive from the clubhouse. Unfortunately the hotel and golf course don't seem to have any reciprocal relationship - no price break on greens fees for staying at the hotel, no storage of golf clubs at the course during extended visits. Minor quibble, but it would improve the overall experience if such a service could be implemented.

As for the resort experience, it was five stars in my book. I'm not looking for fancy dining or accommodations, just a good steak in the restaurant or pizza at the patio bar, with some live music and relaxed atmosphere. Pool nearby, corn hole games going on, grassy area to take a stroll, even some tennis courts. We even felt part of the party when we ordered our meal to-go and sat out on our balcony which overlooked the patio bar and recreation area.

But I've buried the lead here, which is that the golf itself is was separates this place from the competition. Two absolutely top shelf golf courses, in immaculate condition, at pretty reasonable prices. There was one day the Lakes course got a little crowded in the afternoon, but overall my wife and I played as a twosome at a comfortable pace, neither pushing someone in front of us nor being pushed by a group behind.

And the golf itself was spectacular. The Lakes course seems to be generally considered superior - I believe as many as 12 of the 18 greens actually border Lake Saugahatchee making for impressive approach shots and green complexes. But the Links course has by far the most impressive finishing hole, a tough tee shot to an island fairway with a forced carry to an elevated green with a rock wall staring you back in the face. It's an intimidating shot, best on the course.

We are from Maryland and will be back. It's a bit of a haul for us but this place has everything we like to have. Casual atmosphere, premium golf, comfortable but moderately expensive accomodations, recreation opportunities when not playing golf, pool to relax beside and patio bar for food, drink, music and conversation. It's all here. Come on down.

Great test of golf. Played the Lake course 2x and the Short course.

Give the short course a try. 18 holes of 220-50 yard holes, depending what tee you pay from. can play up to 3200 yards. Same design as big courses. Sand, tough greens and fast putts.

The first time I've played Grand National and it won't be the last. The course is beautiful. Great staff, as with all RTJ venues.

I would not recommend having any type of golf tournament here. While it is a nice course,they do not have the work staff or the capacity or the organization to hold many people. Parents had to arrive at the course no later than 4 am just to get a golf cart, no matter what time there child started. Most parents were not able to watch their children play. It's a very long and rigorous course to walk and many were not prepared. We were told we would be put on a "waiting list" and called if a cart became available and we were number told we were the 4th on the list and never received a call or cart. The misinformation and misdirected given to us by the staff was frustrating and exhausting to deal with. I expected more for the Alabama State golf tournament.

A bit "off the beaten path" but great staff, excellent course conditions. Great clubhouse with great place to sit on the veranda for a meal. Beautiful and convenient Marriott hotel right on the property just a couple of minutes from the course.

Awesome facility. Two great championship 18s, excellent practice facilities, and the 18 hole short course is not to be missed. Generally in really good shape and a relatively fair test of the game. Green fees a bit pricey but well within what's accepted these days.
