Made reservations as per website suggestion and was glad I did. They were packed! But we didn't have to wait for our table.
Being a Saturday night and apparently short staffed, the food was a little slow coming out. The wait staff were super friendly and apologetic and gave us a discount for the wait.
The food was super flavorful and filling and everything was very tasty. You can't go wrong with the combination plates- especially if you're a newbie to the cuisine as we were. You get to try a little bit of everything!
Some people have said that the food is too pricy- to them, I say you get what you pay for.
Would go back again, and hopefully soon!response / report this review -

Awesome awesome awesome place. Great food. Beautiful decor. Lovely people. MUST TRY their coffee ceremony. Went here to eat a casual dinner with a friend, ended up marrying him :-).

Great atmosphere, genuine hospitality, delicious and fun!
We are from out of town and had been traveling for several days, we were visiting Cleveland on family matters and were staying nearby.
We had a vegan, an "if you dare!" diner (you'll need to read the menu to understand) and several more-typical diners, there was only one person who had dinned on Ethiopian Cuisine before. One of our party was not feeling well and was graciously accommodated with delicious well cooked plain chicken and plain rice - very comforting and most appreciated.
The customs call for meals to be eaten with a unique bread to be both the liner of the plate (or table shared platter) and to be used as the utensil for picking up the food, the bread is plentifully available. We were able to try two different Ethiopian beers, both excellent and of different characters - one a lager was crisp and smooth, the other had more flavor and more bitter - both delicious.
The food was full flavored and skillfully prepared; it was presented nicely and everything tasted fresh. Generally speaking dishes were well seasoned and tend toward spicy. I had the Gored-gored and was offered mild, medium or hot; I chose medium and while pleasantly spicy it was not so hot as to be unpleasant to me - I did nibble just a bit on the three finger sized hot pepper strips that garnished the dish. The salad that accompanied the dish was delicious.
Next time we will stay and enjoy the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, if we had not been on the road for two days and very tired it would have been a real treat. Several guests were seated in some very comfortable looking chairs at a low round table enjoying the coffee ceremony (smoking coffee beans, incense and Ambasha Bread - and of course the coffee) and clearly spending some quality time indulging in a bit of luxury and meaningful conversation.

Fantastic blends of spices, flavors, heat. You can share you dishes or have them plated separate. I love to bring my friends here to experience this excellent cuisine, and the excellent Ethiopian atmosphere. It's well priced: not cheap but worth every penny spent. I highly recommend.

Been wanting to visit this restaurant for a long time since I heard a lot of good reviews. Finally got a chance to go for dinner there yesterday (May 2017) . The place is small, not modern looking but its got a different look. I liked it. It felt like our waitress was not very happy to take our order- hardly smiled. I am a vegetarian and ordered the vegetarian combination- was really good. Rest of my group also enjoyed the food. Overall, service was 2.9/5 and food 4.5/5. Will surely visit the place again to try out other items.

Tried Ethiopian Cuisine for the first time and I must say I am mighty impressed. Picked a place with a 4.5 rating and that had plenty of Vegetarian and Vegan options to choose from. The ambiance at Empress Taytu was perfect for date, the service was very good and the food was pretty awesome. We tried the Veggie Combination Starter : 4 lentil sambusas, Ayib, Gomen and ambasha bread and then for main course we had a Vegetable Combination Entree a combination of five vegetable dishes: kik (yellow split pea), misir (lentils), gomen (collards), tikil gomen,(cabbage), and kai’sir (beets & potatoes). Finally for Dessert we tried the Taytu Cake : Homemade cupcake served warm with ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce #DateNight #Dinner #EthiopianCuisine #EmpressTaytu #YummyInMyTummy

I've never tasted Ethiopian food before so I thought I'd give it a try. This place does not disappoint!I had the vegetarian combo, iambus and some Ethiopian coffee. All highly recommended. The only word of advice I'd give is that this joint is located in the tenderloin region and is not the safest place in San Francisco. Still definitely give this place a go! Full stars on service, food and a cuisine you shouldn't miss!

Had a reservation and still waited 15 minutes for a table; staff was very busy?. Ordered pretty quicklyappetizer, soup, and dinners. 40 minutes pass and the soup comes75 minutes later waitress says r food is cooking. Table that was there before us just got free samosas bcuz there food was taking so long. 100 min later the appetizer comes out and then within 15 minutes our dinners came. To say the least I was very very hungry and I was not happy with my $20 chicken leg that was less than satisfactory. Not sure that I will give them a second chance.

Absolutely love this restaurant. Do yourself a favor and carve out an evening for an experience like none other. You will be shown hospitality, relaxed service (definitely not rushed like many restaurants push you to the table and then out the door), and dine in a setting both surrounding you and at your table that will have you longing to travel to Ethiopia someday. Communal eating with the injera and meat and/or veggie combo platters, along with a coffee ceremony that will take you invite you in to shared a tradition know for generations upon generations of Ethiopians. Worth making a reservation and dining out here!
