This place is fantastic. There is a guided tour of an old gem mine. You also have the opportunity to find real gemstones such as quartz, sapphires,and various other unique gemstones. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in semiprecious and precious gems.

Very pretty in the cave where they used to mine for the mineral to make Bon AMI scouring powder. There is a pool with large fish. It's green and peaceful by the cave Lots of artifacts from the mining days. You can,gem mine and pan for gold. We enjoyed it very much.

Not the typical roadside tourist trap attraction! A family owned and operated educational and scenic experience with historical significance to the areas past, complete with museum, displays, tours, activities, with retail shops including ice cream and the best homemade fudge varieties in NC! Fascinating background information, crafts, and personal staff attention!

There is a lot to do at this very hidden attraction near Little Switzerland, NC. There are numerous exhibits (mining related and not so much), most of which are free. There is a model railroad exhibit, wildlife exhibit, minerals exhibits and antiques galore. Oh, and the place has emerald mining. The staff is knowledgeable and quite friendly. They will even help you carry your buckets, if needed. Don't expect to make a fortune on gem quality minerals here, but you never know. Either way, you will get dirty and wet---and have a good time with the family mining gems. The drive is a bit long and daunting, but you will have fun if rocks are your thing. Native buckets have mostly (almost all) feldspar and moonstone. The mix buckets are great for the kids to get some minerals for the collection. They offer cabbing but not faceting. You can also risk mining the "dumps" on your own for a fee, but most people would prefer to sit down at the flume and enjoy a bucket or two. Don't expect to get rich--do expect to have a good day out with the family.

This place is awesome there are few buildings to stop at. Paid for the self guided tour, lot of history here even had bonus waterfall and fed the rainbow trout!

This place is awesome! My family and I were here yesterday. We had the best time ever. We found gem after gem. I almost felt guilty after leaving that I had so many rare stones!
The staff is super friendly and nice. This place is a must go. Beware there are many wana be emerald village mines, so make sure you go to the original one. You will not be disappointed. 10 out of 10!

We LOVED Emerald Village! My husband and I - age 72 found the mine tour and history of the mines fascinating! To actually go down into the mine after watching a video of the history and stories of the people who owned and worked in the mines was very interesting!
We also went gem hunting - it was such fun finding gemstones! $20 for a large bucket kept us both busy for hrs. We found lots of beauties and had a large Amethyst cut into a large pendant.
We highly a visit to the Emerald Mines.

Had a great day here-got a bucket of gravel to sluice through with plenty of great finds. Took the self guided mine tour and got to poke our way through all the little knick knacks. Great way to spend a day!

Where to start wait, quick review. Awesome day for the fam. Now, the caveat and long read is we are rock hounds.

So, rock hounds keep sniffing for beta The displays and brochure are fantastic. I'm a male, love museums and read most plaques so the novel idea of numbering the displays and putting cross ref description in the brochure was key. I can quickly take a photo and read at depth later!

My wife and 4 yo daughter loved the grounds, beauty, and waterfall. Feeding the rainbow trout kept the tot busy running for hours. To max tot tiredness, be sure to give only 1 fish pellet at a time and at great distance.

History photos of the mine kept my beautiful wife busy ready so I could geek out looking at the steam gear.

Unmanned museum had great displays and info.

We bought the smallest dirt bucket and stealthily fished out good micro specimens - emeralds and aquamarine included. But no way cutting these booger sized gems. One of the best things of kids filtering dirt is they don't care if the crystal point is an amethyst, quartz or a ruby! Great life lesson!

Downer: I feel bad for bad mouthing anyone but watch out for possible free loading biz Emerald Mines nearby enticing you to pull off the road. Might be legit but at glance looked like a ghost town tourist trap and poser.

Overall enjoy the journey of little Switzerland, the high views, and have a good map in case your mobiles don't work.

WE had so much funa great little tour of this place was enjoyable, and informative. Very beautiful area. Loved mining for gemstones..though we were laughing quite a bit while panning through our bucket. These gems were giant! I'd scoop from the bucket into my grid, and ask my daughter, "Do you think I have anything in this scoop?", while laughing at the giant 5" blue stone. I love rocks, gems etc.so, love getting the giant gems.
