Quickly becoming one of my favorite places in the world, Clementine’s Bake Shop in Berea, KY is like a breath of fresh air. When you walk in, you can instantly tell what kind of bakery you’ve wandered into. Brick along the walls, wooden pastry cases, and friendly smiles remind you that even though they have world class pastries, you’re actually in a very small town. Clementine’s instantly makes you feel welcome, both with their smiles and with their sticker in the window that reads “Business Leaders for Fairness.”
Berea’s warmth and openness can be traced back to the founding of Berea College. The college was founded in 1855 as the first interracial and coeducational college in the South.
Clementine’s is lucky enough to have hand painted window signs from Mike Martinez.
Clementine’s for brunch has quickly become a Saturday tradition. This time, we tried the chocolate croissant, blackberry scone, and vegetable quiche.
One of our favorites, the chocolate croissant has excellent puff pastry, clear layers, and rich, smooth chocolate. Breaking through the puff pastry with a fork is extremely satisfying, but I often find myself not having the patience, eager to eat it.
The blackberry scone was also wonderful with a firm outside and a moist, crumbly inside. Some bites you would come across an almost whole blackberry that would burst as you bit into it, sending the scone over the top.
Finally, my favorite: the vegetable quiche. I could go on about this quiche for days. The crust is buttery, flakey, and golden. The highlights of the filling include the tomato and onion, along with the swiss chard and (when they have it) asparagus. The eggs themselves are the creamiest eggs I’ve ever had. If you don’t like quiche because the eggs are firm and remind you of scrambled eggs in a pie shell, don’t worry, this is the quiche for you. The eggs are soft and smooth, acting as the perfect vehicle for the rest of the filling.
If you can’t tell, I adore Clementine’s Bake Shop. If you’re anywhere near it, whether you’re in Lexington, Richmond, or Berea itself, you have to pay them a visit.response / report this review -

I've been here several times, and the food and service is consistently excellent. Amazing pastries, breads, and hot meals. A comfortable, family-friendly environment. Ingredients are often locally sourced.
