Chihuly and his contributions to the world of glass, glass making, glass style, and glass design are literally unbelievable. Such beautiful and complex works of art on display plus insight to Chihuly's background and growth to be such a Master of this art form. There are no competitors or other artists stretching the limits for what can be done with glass except for his students. Few glass artists have been successful at making such large and colorful workpieces, which command a very high degree of difficulty. The museum is laid out very well plus some video movies streaming historical facts and items of interest about the artist. Don't miss the real live 'glass blowing' demonstration to see how it's done. Well worth the visit.
We visited before heading to airport to return home to Michigan . If you are amazed at the art of glass blowing you will totally enjoy. $20 / $17 seniors great experience. Great little shops in area. I will be back to check out some of the other things to do and see in the area!!
Loved the Chihuly exhibit. Wish it was a little bigger, but was totally worth the admission. I always love the colors and mixed textures of glass in his works.
Bonus was not having to pay for parking unlike so many other museums.
I enjoy the artist enough to have driven from Tampa to see this collection. I've seen his pieces throughout Miami & enjoy his work. The only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 5 is because the tickets are expensive for the number of exhibits. Tickets are $19.95/adult and we finished seeing everything in the gallery in 10 minutes. The gal at the front desk didn't tell us about the glass blowing across the street. I'm sure we would have gotten more bang for our buck is we'd seen that too. Live and learn.
The blown glass exhibit is amazing. The video detailing the blown glass would be better if shorter and oriented at the beginning of the exhibit so that one can gain an appreciation for the art prior to viewing it, rather than showing it at the end of the exhibit. Additionally, the blown glass demonstration was neat, but it would have been a lot more helpful and interesting if the people blowing the glass explained each step and why they were doing what they were doing. They were pretty much silent, and we just watched. I would not pay $20 again to see it again--that's a pretty steep price for seeing a small collection and a strict observation of glass blowing without any narration; but it is worth going at least once, as the art is very impressive.
Beautiful new building housing the Chihuly collection in St Petersburg Florida. Well worth the trip! Beautifully appointed gift shop with reasonably priced items. I bought a Chihuly calendar for 2018 for $15. They also have a great movie you can watch about some of the glass blowing sessions that he does with other artists that work with him. one of the best things to see in the Tampa - St Petersburg area!
The gallery was neat. A lot of glass sculptures displayed. Probably would have been a lot cooler if we would have gone to watch the glass blowing. The video that is shown is way too long. Started watching in the middle and left before the end. Not sure why they were showing what they were showing and didn't want to wait an hour to find out. Over all a good experience but wouldn't go back.
Such an amazing place. They showed a glass blowing demonstration around the corner just before we visited, and my five year old son loved it. We explained to him beforehand that he had to be very careful and walk slowly with mommy or daddy, he was very well behaved, and really enjoyed the glasswork.
Beautiful pieces, not a place for small children. Only takes 2 hours to walk through exhibit. Take the time to watch the movie, it's worth it. Plus you'll see 50 more pieces. Go see FREE Glass Blown Demo. You'll get a whole new appreciation for Chihuly's work.
This was amazing. I recommend seeing this if you are ever in the area. You won't be disappointed.
Fantastic. A must see. Well worth the time to walk through the gallery. When admission is purchased with the glass blowing demonstration this makes for a very enlightening and worthwhile trip.
Glasswork breathtaking beautiful. The demonstration of glassblowing enthralling. Both my 7 year old were entertained for the entire time.
Excellent collection. Best part was free admission to glass blowing experience. They will give you lessons for a fee.
On the positive side, the glass art is exquisitely crafted and quite interesting to view up close. The museum has a relatively nice layout and feels modern. Personally as someone in my 30s, I didn't enjoy the aesthetic of the Chihuly glass work. The art feels flamboyant, and showy and just didn't interest me aesthetically. This is a purely subjective opinion however. The older crowd around me seemed to marvel at the pieces. My second critique is that the price of admission at $20/ adult is far too much for the small size of the museum space. It took us about 20 minutes to view everything, including browsing the gift shop. There was also a video that we didn't see. The price of admission also includes a live glass demo at a glass studio about a block away. This was far more interesting to me to watch, since it was quite mesmerizing seeing a large glass vase come to life starting from raw, molten glass. Overall, if you're in St.Pete for a short time the Salvador Dali museum is a far better value for your time and cost of admission.
