First time we visited this place, we were confused. We were assigned a table number outside the door. We found our table and sat down. Mad small talk for a while and then wondered where our server was. I flagged someone down and they told me that I had to go to the counter to order my breakfast, after that someone would stop by the table to see if I needed anything else. I am not sure if I missed the hostess telling me outside that this was the procedure or she never told me.
When we did get our food, it was good. Not spectacular or anything just good. We had to get our own coffee and tea, which was no big deal. All in all she liked it better than I did, but it was fine for what it was.
BYOB - yes. Innovative menu - yes. Service - wonderful. Venue - delightful. Patio - awesome. This local restaurant is definitely one to visit. Seemingly under the radar but definitely deserves its place on the map! Burrata was a flavorful with bursts of savory from the fried capers. Prosciutto was a surprise with brilliant contrasts of salty and sweet. Lemon cake and chocolate banana bread were perfect as toppers. And the staff was so friendly and fun! Kathleen was so welcoming. Talk about "Service with a smile!" Will definitely be back! GO LOCAL!!!
The french toast here was fairly decent.
The bacon was some of the best I've had at any restaurant.
The service was pretty awful unfortunately.
The waitress forgot 2 of the items I ordered and when I asked about them, she apologized profusely and said she'll get my toast and soup right away. 20 minutes later, after everyone had finished eating, she brings my toast and soup as we were asking for the check. The toast was cold, the soup was dripping all over the table and spilled onto the lap of the person next to me.
Bottom line - for the leisurely diner who appreciates good bacon and doesn't mind their pants smelling like baked potatoes all day, I would recommend this place.
It takes a lot for a sandwich place to earn a fourth star from me, but Birchwood had it from the first bite. On my first visit, I did the soup and half-sandwich. The soup - black bean - was some of the best black bean soup I'd ever had. Then the Spanish tuna sandwich (which is made mayo-less) was full of flavor and different textures. Great tuna, great toppings, great bread. And the generous portion of side salad was appreciated too!
I returned a few weeks later and got the broccoli sandwich. Who are you trying to fool here? This was a grilled cheese with broccoli, and it was awesome. Yum yum yum. It's too bad I don't live in the neighborhood anymore, because I'd be there all the time.
I was here on a Saturday around 12:30 - and the wait was 30 minutes Totally Worth it! (And it's BYOB!!)
While we were waiting for our table to come up, there was unlimited Metropolis coffee.
They're a little different in that they don't have full service (coming soon though!) so you order at the counter, tell them your table number, and go have a seat. They have a cute patio in the back too. They do brunch and Lunch. I opted for Brunch.
The food Just saying that i think that's the best arugula salad I've had. I even ate the beet and the onions. I don't know what they put in their vinaigrette, but it's delicious!
For the main part of my brunch I had Croque Madame. I've had it where the bread was so thick I couldn't eat more than half the meal, but the proportions here were perfect. Like the crispy ham and cheese sandwich with over easy eggs it's supposed to be.
I will go here again, and I will tell all my friends to as well.
How have I in the Wicker/Logan area of Chicago for over 4 years and never been to Birchwood Kitchen?! It's the anecdote to the usually overcrowded places with super long waits in the area. I usually prefer counter ordering anyway, and the food is SO DELICIOUS. We came in just when they were about to close but the people on staff were completely accommodating anyway. My boyfriend had the steak filled pepper which was a bargain and totally delish, and I had the green bean entree, also very good. Everything we ate was fresh and delicious. Our friends burgers also looked like they would taste amazing. AND I think it's BYOB?! Too good! Thank you Birchwood for making me not hate Wicker Park anymore!!
My mom and I had brunch here a few months ago and I can't believe I didn't write a review! It was absolutely fantastic. The menu has changed since I've been there, which is cool since I can't remember what I ordered anyway! But I remember you order at the counter and find a table, and pick up your coffee at the front. Incredibly friendly staff, fresh ingredients, sunny and busy and apparently with a back patio that it was too cold for us to use!
You can order with confidence, the food is made with skill and top-quality ingredients. I know I will be back soon and write a review before I forget what I ordered! (I remember it was a sandwich. And it was delicious.)
