My mother mentioned hearing of this place online so we headed over to check it out. The animals look well cared for and the people volunteering were extremely friendly. Just sad I did not have the time to apply for adoption before heading home from vacation.

We had an amazing time here. We came to look at one puppy in particular, but got to see every animal on the property. Staff members were sweet and very helpful. The property was gorgeous, and every animal was well taken care of.

Alaqua was great to work with. They are located in the pan handle and we are in South west Florida, we found a dog through Pet finder at their refuge. They were so easy to work with and accommodating to us for having to travel 7 hours to meet our potential new fur baby. I was very impressed with everyone from the office staff to the volunteers. It is clean and well organized. All the animals look happy, healthy and well cared for. They really care about the animals finding a good home and do follow up calls and or visits to be sure the animal is fitting in and cared for. Would definitely recommend this facility if you are looking for a new pet or to volunteer with animals of all kinds. If you are even a little bit interested, make an appointment for a tour of the facility, you will not be disappointed.

Great place. Please visit and donate by being a dog walker. Alaqua takes great care to protect the animals against anything that might make them ill. Very impressive.

We visited Alaqua today. What a wonderful facility! Glen gave us a guided tour; there are horses, donkeys, goats, emus, cats, dogs and puppies. This is my happy place! We met a wonderful, fuzzy little dog that we hope to adopt. Kudos, Alaqua, for the work you do.

If you want to tour, call ahead. Unless they have enough staff you will not get a tour. Don't expect to touch or interact with anything unless you are there specifically to adopt a specific animal and I am not positive you will get to then. We saw one cat that was walking around freely. I think they have good intentions with the animals, it is clean, animals seem well taken care of but I would not have drove 40 mins to walk around in the heat had I known we would not be allowed to touch anything or received an actual tour. Cats are kept in a screened building like an open air kennel, kittens in a small cabin in cages, which you are not even allowed inside, you can look through the windows. Dogs in runs and free standing kennels. I do understand that the interaction is for safety/health reasons. Do they realize those "visiting" may be possible donors to their cause if not adopting?

Wonderful facility. Good hearted, caring people taking the best possible care of the animals at Alaqua, and finding perfect forever homes whenever possible. Every creature there is loved. Cannot imagine a better situation for them.

Wonderful place! I have adopted two dogs and a bird there. The cages are well kept and clean. The staff is polite and friendly and most importantly the animals are adorable!

Absolutely loved how clean and loved the animals are here by the volunteer staff!! Only reason for 3 stars is because good friends of mine were refused adoption due to lack of medical records for their deceased dog. Reason they didn't have records was because their brother in law was a retired vet and cared for their dog when needed. Their dog died at 17 years old and had a happy, healthy loving life and if they would have called the referrals (which included the vet) they would see that they were perfectly capable and qualified to adopt another pet that their family would love and adore. I understand and respect strict adoption guidelines but this was a bit much, considering that other friends of mine adopted from here without any questions of previous medical care.

Alaqua is a wonderful safe haven for animals. I've volunteered there for 5 years, and it's been the most rewarding experience in my life.

We went out to the refuge to go see the animals and hopefully adopt a new pet! Well the front office was absolutely horrible. They treat you like you are a criminal. As you are asking questions they cut you off, don't make eye contact they honestly look like they could careless if you were even there to give a precious pup a forever home. The place looks amazing and I am sure the animals are taken care of but man the staff is truly awful. It's just sad!

Warm reception to prospective owners. Caring staff and volunteers. Animals are well cared for; this is a "no-kill" shelter. Our dog was rescued by Alaqua from a local dog pound just before he was scheduled to be euthanized. So grateful to them for everything they do.
