Great for small groups, harder for large groups. (Over 5)
I have come here before as a party of 3 or 4 and had no difficulties on waiting to be seated or for food. The tables, space and busyness of this restaurant could make people in larger parties claustrophobic as things are tight.
If you are looking for excellent seafood or pasta or cocktails, this is the right place.
Been coming here for over 15 years with family when we visit my great uncle. We always come on a Friday for the fish fry which is awesome. Since we usually have a large party, we always have to wait-20 to 40 minutes.
Last night we (all 7 of us) decided to come right when they opened at 4:30pm and we did not have to wait and got seated by the always friendly, accommodating staff right away.
The problem with being part of a large group is that they waited for us all to stop looking at our menus before they took our order when we were actually ready long before that. Also, there were many tables that arrived after us that got served way before us because they wait for ALL orders to be done before bringing them out.
This essentially meant that some of us had cold cod fish and those of us that ordered the baby walleye had hot fish. It also meant that they brought out the all you can eat sides (which there are a large plentiful variety of) that come with the all you can eat cod fish first. This kept us from starving, but if you are trying to make sure you save room for fish, it makes things difficult.
The sides were brought out at least 15 min before the main entrees were served and we waited as smaller tables were served.
I guess it would not be so difficult to save room for the fish if their homemade bread was not so absolutely awesome! I also love that their apple sauce is served warm- it is so good that way.
I have had pasta and other things off of the menu over the year, all of them good portions and excellent.
Beautiful wood beams throughout and curios from days of old make a great atmosphere.
It is also a great, fun bar if you can get a seat.response / report this review -

Great chicken, the mashed potatoes and stuffing were a little bland. Old fashion was very good. Great service owners on site.

After starting with well mixed cocktails, our party of 4 had fried walleye (perfectly done), "surf and turf" (perfectly done steak with an accommodating substitution of jumbo shrimp for scallops" and the Thursday nite rib special. It was all really good and all really gone when we were finished.
Our server was prompt and attentive, not to mention very pleasant and unruffled by our various requests.
Atmosphere is pure Wisconsin Supper Club!

An authentic dinner club experience with kind wait staff and a neat atmosphere. The history of the place is written in the menu and is very interesting. The building is made of logs adding to the Northwoods experience. The food is decent and they have many specials throughout the week, namely the all-you-can-eat belated chicken and sides on Sunday

We enjoyed the excellent chicken supper! The chicken is done perfectly, mashed potatoes & gravy & dressing are so tasty. So are the salads & coleslaw. Topping the meal off with a slice of sweet nut bread! Lots of food! Served quickly too!

1st time there in April for a fish fry. 4 adults and a 1 yr. old. Nice atmosphere. Very up north like. Not overly crowded but everything seemed to take forever. Drinks were slow and had to flag down our waitress. Took about 45 min. to get any of our food
(i.e. bread, slaw, etc). Not sure why an all you can eat fish fry would take almost an hour to get to the table. It's not like they don't know that people are coming in Friday night for a fish fry. Tables were not all full! Fish was good, and came with all the extras. 1 person had chicken and said it was OK. Do not think it was enough to make us have dinner there again. This was our first visit to Al Gens Dinner Club in Rhinelander. Ron Faiola's Wisconsin Supper Club book brought us in. We were warmly greeted at the bar by Deb as she mixed Old Fashioneds for us and told us some of the history of the Al Gen Dinner club. Deb took great care us as we enjoyed some great conversation at the bar. Theresa was our server tonight - first crackers and a sizeable scoop of Wisconsin spreadable cheese. Next came some warm rolls and homemade walnut bread with our house salads and delicious house made dressings. She tried the evenings special of Deep Fried Baby Walleye served with a piping hot baked potato. I tried the Jumbo shrimp (recommended by Jennifer at Tricia's Treasures) - they were huge and delicious. Five large prawns served with the best hash browns I've had in some time - WOW!. Theresa was efficient and delivered on the Al Gen reputation of Northwoods hospitality. Al Gen's Dinner Club has iconic Northwoods decor and feel - with it's roots dating back to 1932. It was a pleasure to visit this iconic Northwoods supper club - if you are in the area, stop in and give them a visit, I am confident you'll enjoy it.
