Topkapi Palace is one of those places that is just brimming with life and ambiance. My personal favourite section was the swords and armour and clothing section, though all throughout the Manor you'll find it steeped in history and architecture of a beautiful yet bygone era. To top it all off, there is a calligraphy section as you exit, costing you pennies yet creating the most beautiful artwork you can get in Turkey
The best historic museum that I have been in my entire life! One of the best places to visit during your time in Istanbul. Lots of history!! It is huge and you get to see how how once the emperors of the world lived. Every tile, china, ceiling, every detail brings you to the old times. By the way, it has an absolutely fantastic view to the Marmara sea in one of the main balconies. You should see Istanbul in the eyes of the Sultan's in that balcony.
Seriously one of my favorite tourist places that I visited in Istanbul. Seeing so much Islamic history in one place was incredible. Of course my favorite exhibit was where the relics of past prophets, including Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), were stored. No pictures are allowed in that area, but that’s completely understandable due to the precious nature of the items. I was surprised to see relics from so many different prophets. It was so humbling.
Everywhere you look there is beauty and opulence. Gold, marble, hand painted tiles - every angle was picturesque. The view over Istanbul was BREATHTAKING and unexpected. You can see why the sultan picked that spot for the palace!
There was a lot of restoration going on at the time I went (October 2019). Many areas were off limits. Still well worth the trip! We also explored on our own without a tour guide. We enjoyed it thoroughly!
A really great place to visit. The people who don't like to visit historical places, should go and check this site. I am sure, they will surely love it. The architecture is awesome. Trust me, you can spend a day over their. The entrance fee is minimal and worth watching. Dont wait, go and check it out.
One of the most historic places you’ll find in Istanbul. It’s a must see for every tourist that comes to this city. Filled with history, the place needs a whole day just for itself so you can fully admire it. I suggest you buy a city pass in advance so you can skip the lines at the ticket stores. There are great offers for city passes that are even delivered to your hotel.
Brilliant place!! Sacred relics section was amazing!
However, take the credit card with you to buy tickets thru the machine or it will take approximately an hour for you to buy ticket via cash because of rush and huge waiting line!
Remember, if you have a wheelchair with you, the area around Topkapi is is built on inclined road. So it is very difficult to move the wheelchair towards the entrance of the museum.
We arrived at the ticket office about 9:45 and amazingly there was no queue although there were lots of tour groups around but they already had tickets. There was a bit of a queue to get through the security screening but it's better to be safe.
There was a lovely smell of hyacinths in the gardens and the tulips are just starting to come out with roses to follow.
The various rooms, pavilions etc are very impressive but are just bare rooms so it's very difficult to visualise exactly what they looked like.
The harem is well worth the extra 25TL and there is slightly more furnishing here than in the rest of the palace.
There is a good café plus a restaurant with great views of the Bosporus and there are good signs in English as well as Turkish at all the main places of interest.
We spent about 2.5 hrs here and there is a lot to see but it would benefit enormously from having more furnishing or artifacts in the rooms/pavilions.
The cost for the main palace is 40TL and an additional 25TL for the harem.
It's an interesting museum in that it's a huge palace whose rooms they've converted into mini exhibits. But the admission process was SO poorly managed--for a site that's regularly visited by thousands, you'd think they'd have a better system. It was all pushing and shoving. And once you got inside, there isn't a clear pathway of how to see the museum. The rooms are sporadically on the way. It would have been way better managed if admissions was a controlled line, and each person was given a detailed brochure with the museum layout and places to see things. Furthermore, pictures weren't allowed inside the exhibits at all and this was strictly enforced by their guards everywhere.
Overall, the items in the the museum were cool and the palace is beautiful, but its management need improvement.
I haven't taken any audio guide. But I found the descriptions detailed enough. This is so big that it will take more than a day to explore everything.
The palace is beautiful and all but the kitchen is something very fascinating. Harem is also a must visit. If you are inquisitive or a history buff you will absolutely fall in love with this place.
Of course it is very touristy, but don't let that deter you. Go early in the morning, because then the lines for tickets aren't that long yet. Buy a ticket to the harem too! Very nice to visit and a must see when you visit topkapi. There is a lot of greenery on the palace grounds, which is especially great if the weather is nice. Cute restaurant, where you can sit next to the Bosporus and have a great view of the Asian side of Istanbul. When we were there, the self-service side of the restaurant only accepted cash, so that was a bummer.
The most important site to visit in Istanbul.
Buy the multi museum pass beforehand to save money if you will visit at least one other site on the list but also to save time in the loooong ticket line there. Get there early to avoid some of the crowds. Avoid Turkish holidays and weekends where locals would add to the size of the crowds in Mass. This site needs at least 3 hours to savor fully. But more is recommended.
Very interesting palace. Somewhere not to miss when you are going in Istanbul. You can feel the greatness and ambitions of The Mehmed the conqueror and all the rooms are very luxurious and large. There is also a display of the old jewels and items used at the time. The entry is not free but it has a large garden to rest if needed. IT is better to come out of the season otherwise you might queue for hours !
A huge tourist attraction, you will need up to half day to make the most of your visit.
The place is rich with history, and the setup is very informative in English, Turkish and Arabic. They also provide an audio guide which is well worth it.
There are also good views and seating areas around the entire palace.
There is a cafeteria were you can get refreshments.
It is very interesting place! Huge! Many interesting details. Maps and signs are good, well secured place. Although part of it on renovation(end of October), still so much you can see. Only queue to the ticket office was for about 20 minutes. And please - chargers!
A must visit place with lot of jewels to see such as Islamic relics, weapons and remaining of ottoman Empire and other unique collection of art and never seen structures. It also house harem and best views of Istanbul and marmara sea from courtyard. Real value for the money you pay
It has amazing artifacts and very beneficial knowledge. Quick tip no need to exchange money to buy your entrance ticket which is 40 lira for the one museum. If you'll be there for a few days there's an option you get a 5 day pass for only double that. You may need Turkish money to rent the audio guide it's only 20 TL.
Of the things you will see:
Prophet Muhammad's footprint
Swords of his comanions
The Staff of Moses
Belongings to other Prophets and more. Taking photos are not allowed but I didn't know so I'm sharing them.
Definitely a must visit if you're in Istanbul. Allocate at least 2 hours. Bring some snacks or book to read at the garden. There's a restaurant inside the palace that offer nice view of the sea. Unfortunately I didn't get to try it out as it was closed by the time I got there. Definitely do this together with the over two museums located nearby. Also check out Hagia Irene if you have the museum pass. ( won't take more than 15 minutes ) You can easily spend half a day at this place. Museum pass is definitely recommended.
It means a lot of history
But there are some limitations
You need to walk for a long distance and if you have a child or an old person, it is better to bring a trolley or wheelchair with you.
If the weather is hot, buy some water from outside before you enter.
The ticket price is 40 lera
If you are going to visit it in summer take with you a hat or umbrella + sunglasses
There is a difficulty to find a taxi when you are going back home you have to walk for a half hour. Better to go with group or to use a train.
Topkapi Palace, the home of the Ottoman Sultan in Istanbul deserves a proper visit. Spare almost a half day to see its grand courtyards, extra ordinary displays and of course the Harem. If you buy a Museum Pass, it also includes the Harem complimentary.
You can find nice shaded areas for a break or enjoy the views from the fourth terrace.
The best time would be the late afternoon as it is much less crowded and has wonderful colours of sun going down.
place topkapi very beuatiful view. i like it. i dream i will come to place topkapi. miss u topkapi
I would like to start off with how grateful i am to be apart of such a rich and magnificent culture. I would lime to thank the people responsible for allowing us to have a glimpse of our past so vividly. Every muslim in my opinion should be dedicated to visit here.
The palace/museum is very beautiful. The buildings are old and antique. We can see precious things from Islamic history and Sultan's collections. The garden is dazzling, especially when you come at spring. It takes times to go through all over museum but worth it if you love museum.
This place is more historical area of Istanbul. It is now a museum and tourist attraction. It also contains important relics of the Muslim world, including Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) cloak and sword. And this place also contain Sultan Mehmet's residence areas including all their furniture etc.
I believe it's the jewel of Istanbul! It reflects the history of the Ottoman Empire and contains valuable religious and historical objects, artistic images of letters in calligraphy, and so much more to see! You'll need a day to visit Topkapı.
