This is nice place. It was booked for me for a conference so I actually learned that it is the 5 stars only afterwards. Would not say that. I mean it is very nice and has spa area and gym on top floor free to use for guests, that is very good. Restaurant is fair, not the best, with strange European fusion meals (maybe that was just for us). There is very nice ball room on the 12th floor with about 180 degree view. The cleaning of rooms is ridiculously extreme. Example, I came after lunch to take a nap in my room, it was cleaned and bed made. I came there in evening and it was done again. In about 5 occasions cleaners entered room during daytime to do sth. probably check if everything is ok, but that was quite too much I would say. I thought that it would be not necessary to put "Don´t disturb" sign on the door everytime I go to my room for a toilet. Plus the male level spa (it is one level down from female) looks considerably worse, also with view to industrial part of Istanbul, bent planks on ceiling of sauna, draft around the window.

Do not go thinking it is 5 star hotel AT ALL!!!

This hotel has got to be the worst 5-star experience anywhere on earth. I'm traveling all over the world, staying in the very best hotels. That gives me the perspective to compare. The Surmeli Istanbul Hotel is staffed with inexperienced personnel straight out of school.
Such bad rooms, stinking washrooms, untidy bedspreads, badly maintained rooms. And top it all such bad behavior and unfriendly manner from staffs. Not at all guest friendly. Don't even think about stepping into this old fashioned place even if it is for one single night. The location is not good at all. You can find lots of better places in Istanbul. The Breakfast is OK not the best. the WiFi was terrible, the rooms were old, I would not be coming back to this hotel again. I have meanwhile heard a number of negative comments from friends and associates

I personally like the hotel. Staff are super friendly and helpful. The view is beautiful specially around sunset.

The food isn't the best I've ever had but it's good!

Hygiene wise they could definitely improve. I found a stain on my pillow and the water bottle wasn't new.

Maybe some time this hotel was 5 star but currently it is 3 star because old stuff are all out of date in here.

unfortunately there is a few strange regulations like you can not bring in any kind of food or beverage and you have to eat either in the hotel restaurant or outside the hotel. to be honest prices are fifty percent higher than outside the hotel.
